Kingston, Pennsylvania is a small town in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and is the county seat for York County. The population was 9,885 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous municipality in York County after York City. The township of Kingston was organized in 1824 and named after Prince George's County, Maryland, where George Washington had been born. The first settler in Kingston was Nicholas Haverhill from England who arrived in 1795. He built a log cabin on what is now Bowie Street. In 1824, following the Mexican-American War, General James Kapp moved his forces to Kingston and founded Fort Kapp as part of an effort to protect American settlers from Mexico. In 1827, he married Theresa Ladd and set up home with her family on Main Street near present day College Avenue. The fort served as a base of operations for Kapp's military campaigns during the 1840s and 1850s against Native Americans in central Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio. In 1849 when Lancaster County was created from Northumberland County, Kingston became one of its townships within that new county boundaries. It remained an unincorporated community until 1916 when it became part of the newly formed Borough of Lancaster which merged with neighboring boroughs on April 1, 1917 to form the current borough of Kingstown Township which included Kingston proper within its boundaries until November 3rd, 2017 when that boundary changed due to annexation by neighboring boroughs Kingstown Heights and Kingstown Springs into Kingstown Township proper. As one result of changes occurring throughout western Pennsylvania during the Great Depression era (1929–39), many manufacturing businesses closed or were relocated to other parts of America while others failed altogether because they could not compete with prices being offered by larger companies located eastward along I-80 outside Philadelphia or New York City; however some businesses such as candy stores continued to operate even though their customers were internalized by those larger companies out of reach for most residents). One example is Beechman's Candy Store which reopened after being closed for several years due to market saturation by big box retailers; previous owners Frank Beechman (a self-employed laborer) and his wife Mamie opened their store back up on Market Place next door in 1936 under new ownership before finally closing it down around 1990 due to financial difficulties caused by increased competition from out-of-state merchants especially Walmart whose entrance onto US Highways 509 made shopping much easier for local residents than before since there was no independent stoplight nearby offering completing an entire block walk without stopping at any stores). Kingston experienced another significant change starting around 2007 when Bethlehem Steel Corporation decided not renew its lease at its former steelmaking site adjacent to Joe Frazier Park West so all production ceased beginning September 7th 2007 while plans were underway internally at Bethlehem Steel Corporation HQ (now known as "The Foundry" apartments) inside what used once been Susquehanna University's old physics building adjacent northeast corner lot between Walnut Streets & South Wittenberg Streets - soon afterwards construction began exterior prompting speculation whether this might be related directly surrounding events happening nationally resulting including Lehighton University's decision also earlier same year not renewing their lease concurrent with Bethlehem Steel Corp.) later resulting both facilities closure followed shortly thereafter perhaps coincidentally both facilities shutdown timing just prior too specific national events/pressure resultant likely leading moreso retail shoppers seeking alternative solutions if unable/unable access properties located close thereto) although ultimate outcome remains unknown somewhat raising suspicions among local residents about potential collusion between large business interests & government officials). Kingston, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The population of Kingston was 5,811 at the 2010 census. The town was founded on December 12, 1754 by Colonel John Butler and Major James Caldwell. It is named after King George II of the United Kingdom who visited the area in 1756. The first settlers to Kingston were farmers who arrived in 1755. They built homes out of logs and barns that they constructed from what they could find lying around the area. By 1800, many farmers had moved to Kingston and it became an important center for trade and commerce. The first post office was established in 1805 and it served as the primary delivery point for goods arriving from Lancaster County. In 1829, the town developed a school system which helped give Kingston a strong foundation for future growth. During World War II, Kingston played an important role in the war effort by providing food, munitions, gasoline and other resources to allied forces stationed throughout eastern Pennsylvania. After the war ended, many businesses closed down but Kingston continued to grow as a result of its unique history and economy. Today, Kingston is home to a vibrant community which continues to thrive thanks to its friendly inhabitants and rich history
Kingston was founded in 1718 by Samuel Kingston and his brother, Christopher. The first settler in the area was Moses Rittman, who built a cabin on the east side of the Susquehanna River. In 1727, John Dunmore granted land to Samuel Kingston for an academy and college. The college opened in 1739 and became known as the University of Pennsylvania. In 1802, when Pennsylvania became a free state, Kingston became its capital. In 1814, the city annexed part of Huntingdon County and renamed it Philadelphia. In 1828, Kingston merged with Reading Township to form Reading Borough. On January 1, 1907, Reading Borough lost its charter and became a part of Philadelphia again.
