The following year Robertson's group erected a log cabin on what is now Fountain Street near present-day Central Catholic Church. In 1821 John Hethwick opened a gristmill on Delaware Creek and began producing flour for local markets. By 1830 there were six stores and two hotels operating in Kingston. In 1839 Daniel Dennison built a mill on Delaware Creek which became one of the largest mills in western Pennsylvania during the 19th century In 1855 William Lamberton founded an ice business here which became one of the leading importers of cold goods from northern America . In 1865 Erie Railroad president George Stephenson donated land for a new transportation center that would become known as Kingsport . The first store building at this location was constructed by Wm Egan & Bros., owners of Kingsport (now part of Pittsburgh). A post office was established at Kingston on December 12, 1821, with Aiken Jourdan as mailer. On July 3, 1907, it was discontinued because no mail could be processed daily due to high volume at other post offices around town . One reason why this defunct post office may have been more important than others may have been its location - situated just steps away from both central business district (CBD) shops and several churches ). The last registered owner of the property was Mrsgrace Knecht who resided there until her death on November 9th 2009 . Kingston is one of two towns in Lancaster County and the only one outside of Lancaster Township. It is also one of two towns in Pennsylvania that are not incorporated as cities or villages. The first people to settle in what is now Kingston were Germans who arrived in 1798 from Königsberg, Germany on a horse-drawn wagon caravan. They named their new community after Prince George's County (now Baltimore), Maryland which they had visited before. The first school was built near the intersection of West Market Street and North Main Street in 1803 by order of Governor Thomas Mifflin. In 1814 a branch line from Harrisburg reached Kingston via Waynesboro and Easton and it became known as "The York Road". In 1828 an act was passed by the General Assembly creating Lancaster Township with Kingston as its seat. In 1830 local resident James Caldwell donated land for a public square on which to build a courthouse and jail; these were both built between 1830 and 1834 according to village records. The town's railroad connection made it an important center during the early days of American Railroads when goods were transported long distances over railroads rather than being transported by boat or wagons like most rural areas at that time. Kingston experienced heavy German settlement during World War II with some 6,000 people moving into the township during bombing raids against Dresden on April 15-18 1945 alone; however no loss or damage resulted to either community due to this activity. After World War II, many Italians moved into town after being displaced by American forces throughout Europe while others followed shortly thereafter because of job opportunities available here postwar compared to other major U .S . Cities such as New York City or Chicago where Italian Americans constituted large percentages of populations even though they did not have full voting rights until after 1959 when legislation granting them those rights was passed under Lyndon B Johnson's presidency
