During World War I, Kingston was an important military supply center because it was home to two Douglas Aircraft plants which produced fighter planes for America's war effort. The first settler in Kingston was Nicholas Brown who arrived in 1786. In 1814, John Fenton bought land in Kingston and established the township of Fenton. After the American Civil War, Kingston became part of the newly formed Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In 1907, the Township of Kingston was annexed into the borough of Lancaster. In 1914, the Borough of Lancaster merged with the Township of Kingston to form the current Borough of Kingston. The name “Kingston” comes from two places: one is from King James I who conquered Jamestown in 1607; and another place is from an Englishman called Kintyre who came to America about 1650. He named his community after Prince Charles Stuart which means “the good king” or “the powerful one” because he had helped lead British forces against Spanish forces during their war for independence from Spain. The first courthouse in Kingston was built by Ebenezer White in 1812-13. It served as a court house until 1830 when a new courthouse was built by Colonel Samuel Greenough and served until 1853 when it was replaced by a larger building designed by James Hoyle that still stands today at 5th and Market Streets. The old courthouse burned down on October 12th, 1853 but fortunately no damage resulted because several other buildings around town were also destroyed that same night including a blacksmith shop on High Street which continued to operate until 1865 when it closed its doors forever due to poor financial conditions brought about by violence within society at that time). During World War II, many local businesses functioned successfully providing food and shelter for soldiers stationed here including Mrs.[?] Kirby’s bakery which supplied troops garrisoning nearby Fort Gettysburg as well as confectioners such as Mrs.[?] Goudreau’s store which produced French chocolate bars for military personnel stationed here; Mrs.? In 1975, during fiscal year 1974-75 there were total expenditures amounting to $5 million dollars representing an 82% increase over fiscal year 1973-74 appropriations amounting only $3 million dollars less than budgeted results reflecting increased state support programs contributing greatly towards overall success achieved through Erie County government under then Commissioner Don Reisinger ultimately leading to retention/creation/enhancement jobs throughout much OFE with strong city leadership [referring specifically nowto Mayor Linda Thompson's latest remarks accompanying her presentation entitled "Economic Development Opportunities Within Lancaster County" at this past summer's Lancaster County Commissioners Meeting held September 9th - 11th 2014]. Today we have significant economic development opportunities within our county thanks largely to increases seen nationally throughout recent years – including expansions undertaken within both manufacturing industries (+11%) & retail (+15%), respectively – all resulting directly or indirectly from proximity & successful collaboration between our county government & private sector partners!
