The history of gun sights in Kingston, Pennsylvania dates back to the early 1800s. At that time, the area was a frontier town and there were few civilian firearms available. The only means of acquiring a firearm was to purchase it from a gunsmith or other licensed dealer. One such dealer was John Dorman, who operated out of the old post office building on Market Street. Dorman developed what is now known as Dorman's Rifle Sight Company, which became one of the largest rifle sight companies in America. He also served as Mayor of Kingston from 1894 to 1896. Dorman's Rifle Sight Company supplied sights for many different types of rifles, including muzzleloaders and breechloading guns. His company also manufactured optics, including reflex sights and windage adjustment tools for handguns. In 1924, Dorman died at age 94 years old and his son remained in business until his death in 1951. Today, John Dorman's Rifle Sight Company still operates out of their original location on Market Street in Kingston Township (now part of Butler County).

The town's name comes from Johnstown Township and Kingston Hill in Bethlehem Township which were both named for General George Washington and his army during the American Revolution. When the Treaty of Paris was signed after that war ended, General Washington's troops vacated what is now Kingston and moved west to Bethlehem where they founded a new town - Johnstown - on December 12, 1781. During World War II, Kingston was involved in both airborne missions and naval warfare off Lebanon Island as part of Amphibious Forces Eighth Naval District patrol squadron No. 522-C commanded by Rear Admiral Arthur Crouch Jr.. After V-E Day on May 8th 1945 when Japan surrendered unconditionally following Emperor Hirohito's surrender speech that day at Tokyo Radio Hall, all U.S forces ceased hostilities here as part of Emperor Shōwa's peace declaration issued that same day. On October 7th 1960 Kingman High School opened its doors with Basic Education programs through Allegheny County until it merged with Duquesne University High School in 1984. In 2000 there were plans to build an education mall called "Queen City" near downtown but no construction ever took place. On September 10th 2009 it was announced that Comcast would be constructing a large new high school building east of downtown called Kingman Park West Campus which would include 500+ classrooms including 50 science labs< ref="/www." /> It should be noted that this project never got started despite numerous attempts by various levels within Comcast to do so over many years; development activity eventually stopped altogether due to economic reasons.< ref="/www." /> In 2013 Kingman Park East Campus renovations began but have not yet been completed; see below for more information about this project.
Kingston also has a small business district centered around Main Street which contains several small businesses including: A&W Pizza Garden & Publix Supermarket; Billie Jean’s BBQ; Sargeant Technologies Inc.; National Tire & Rubber Company;; Ford dealership;; KFC China Buffet. There are also several churches located throughout the community: First Congregational Church (founded 1826); Methodist Episcopal Church (1885); Presbyterian Church (1895); Baptist Churches USA(1905) As mentioned before, Kingston had plans to build an education mall called "Queen City" close to downtown but no construction ever took place. In 2013 Kingman Park East Campus renovations began but have not yet been completed. One such project is The Glass House – an apartment complex that has been home to several failed startups over the years – which is set to undergo a major renovation next year that will include new housing, shopping precincts and public space. Overall, though there are some areas where Kingston feels like it is slipping behind other cities in terms of development rate (e.g., its lack of nightlife), overall it remains an interesting place to visit and understand more about its history and culture.
