Johnstown is a small town in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,691 at the 2010 census. Johnstown is one of the few communities in the United States with a shooting history dating back to 1871. The town was once home to both rifle and shotgun ranges. In 1903, Johnstown became the first community in America to require hearing protection for all employees working with firearms. The town's early gunfire history can be traced back to 1871 when three men from Johnstown settled on Lower Main Road in what is now Johnstown. They bought 6 acres of land and began clearing it of trees and building a cabin that would serve as their shooting range and business center. Between 1872-1875, they built two more buildings on the property - an old schoolhouse and a barn which served as their Range House until 1906 when they replaced it with their current Shooting Hall which still stands today. In 1903, Johnstown became the first American community to mandate that all employees working with firearms were required to wear hearing protectors while at work. This decision was made due to concerns about firearm accidents happening during wartime where people could not hear or understand what was being said around them. At that time, only about 10% of Americans had heard about modern radios so it was important for businesses like these ones to have something available that would allow customers who needed help understanding what was going on without having too much trouble getting inside without getting hurt or killed. As time passed, other communities followed suit and by 1958 all municipalities in Allegheny County had adopted similar ordinances requiring workers wearing hearing protectors while at work (or anytime else using voice communication). Wexler designed a device that consisted of139 metal plates that were sewn together at an angle, with two large posts inserted into the middle of the devices. The ear pieces were then placed over the top of these devices and tightened using a knob. This type of hearing protection was known as “Wexler’s Ear Protection helmet”. In the 1940s, another type of hearing protection was created by General Electric Company engineers called the “Bendix Hearing Protector”. These helmets used plastic cups instead of metal plates and had smaller ear pieces that were attached to slips that rested on either side of the head. Johnstown is a town in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Johnstown was founded by James Fenton in 1795 and became an incorporated community on February 18, 1868. The post office moved to Johnstown from Greenville in 1907 and remained there until it closed on July 25, 1969. Johnstown has been called "the Gateway to the Allegheny Mountains" for its location at the mouth of the Monongahela River. The original land that now makes up Johnstown was gifts to English settlers by Chief Potawatomi and his band of warriors following their victory over French forces during the American Revolution. In 1795, James Fenton set out from Westmoreland Township with three hundred men to found what would become Johnstown. For many years it was considered one of the most remote British settlements in North America because it consisted only of aForty-mile (64 km) stretch of water frontage along the Monongahela River. Fenton's first store opened in 1798 and he named it Fort Niles after his home state of New York City where he had also settled before departing for America with his family. After several additions and reductions in population due to diseases such as smallpox and measles, Fenton sold his business interests in 1800 and built a new store on Main Street which still stands today as the nucleus of present day James Fenton Elementary School complex that fronts Second Street.. This initial store served as a nucleus around which other early businesses developed including shipbuilding yards (1802), wagon manufacturing mills (1805), sawmills (1820), coal mines (1822), blacksmiths shop (1825), livery stable ( 1830)and finally physician’s surgery(1901). By 1830 there were five stores operating within two blocks of each other downtown - all serving residents who lived within walking distance or less than one mile from either main street offering variety products like groceries, clothing, shoes etc., all delivered directly to their doorsteps! In 1868 when Johnstown became an incorporated community under Act No 9 Of March 3rd 1865 readopted by Statute No 1 Of April 14th 1865 its first mayor was Jno S Hawkins... Mr Hawkins made special efforts throughout his term(nine months)to beautify & improve our city Limits otherwise known as "The Bottom" & Our present limits bounded w/ E Broad St.(nowitten Market Place)...During these ninemonths he ordered gutters cut down on Main & 2nd Streets; brick sidewalks laid public ways newly graded; Sealer put down new pavement lot near Post Office on Market Place; extensively repairs old buildings....Our citizens have always gone above & beyond for us thruout our history making this their home
