Johnstown is a small town in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, United States, located on the south bank of the Susquehanna River. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It was once a major steel center and today is known for its agricultural products and as a location for Manufacturing operations in both aluminum and knife industries. The town was founded by John Cadbury in 1788, who named it after his patron saint, James Cadbury. In 1834, Johnstown became part of the new United States when West Virginia left the Union. The first knives were made here in Johnstown by farmers using sharpened sticks or hoes to catch wild animals that were then killed and their meat eaten. early settlers used adzes and hoes to make rudimentary daggers from animal skin which they stored inside woven baskets made from reeds or straws. By 1800 there were over 100 knife makers in Johnstown producing mostly daggers and paring knives but also hatchets, stilettos, spades, tomahawks and bows & arrows.
