On July 9th 1859, when President Andrew Johnson ordered all military forces west of Pittsburgh to disperse or be disbanded due to increased Native American hostilities east of that city limits before their move into Indian Territory starting January 1st 1861 Johnson dispatched Colonel Edward Aiken with three companies of cavalry and five hundred men to patrol this area – one mile north of present-day Johnstown – until relieved by Brigadier General George Armstrong’s Brigade on July 12th 1861 In 1865 Union troops burned down part of downtown Johnstown as they retreated from Gettysburg after Confederate soldiers attacked them there two days earlier while they were besieging Fort Donelson north of town. This event helped start the current problem between residents and developers who have built up over time around what was once an open space used for agriculture and recreation On April 14th 1865 about 20 local men went into downtown Johnstown to steal horses belonging to Confederate Major General Gouverneur Maxwell which had been hidden near some stores in town center prior to that day’s events Johnston County entered into a Compact [sic] with Pennsylvania on November 10th 1868 which provided for better water transportation between these two counties as well as creation of township boundaries within Johnston County . On December 17th 1870 a mill race [now called Newtown creek] became available adjacent to railroad tracks running north-south just south of where it currently meets Beaver Dam Creek . On February 3rd 1878 land grants were made available by Governor Anthony Rendell along Beaver Dam Creek watershed including those contained within what is now Township Line #2approximately twelve miles northeast of present-day Johnston City adjoining Carnegie Mellon University campus located approximately two miles southwest In 1886 Milton Hershey Company opened its first chocolate factory in what would become known as “the Townships” adjacent to then North Pennsylvanian Railway Station johnsontownpa 5554

In 1865, Johnstown became part of Pennsylvania’s new commonwealth following its creation as a result of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution which granted voting rights unto all citizens regardless of race or color. In 1870, Johnstown’s first post office opened with mail service arriving twice daily from Altoona via stagecoach . The economy changed dramatically during World War II when industries such as aluminum production shifted from eastern Pennsylvania into Western Europe . Consequently, there were large numbers of discharged military personnel living in Johnstown until 1945 who were not allowed back into their homes until after hostilities ended . Johnstown experienced another period of growth starting around 1960 when it became home to Penn State College (now Temple University) which began offering undergraduate degrees in various fields including engineering , business administration , health sciences , law enforcement/firefighting/police services etc .. This growth continued through many expansions over time including Polytechnic Institute (now Brown University) becoming one campus withinJohntown while also adding master’s degree programs in education (Wharton School), engineering (Pennsylvania State University), information technology (University Park), social work (Drexel University) etc .. Today there are more than 30 colleges and universities operating withinJohntown making it one OFA district .
