Johnstown is a small town in Pennsylvania, located in the Susquehanna Valley. The population of Johnstown was 9,100 as of the 2010 census. It is the home of The Johnstown School District. The first gun target in Johnstown was established on May 2, 1814 by Captain James W. Johnston and Company G of the Second Regiment United States Volunteers during the War for Independence. Captain Johnston became known as “the father of Johnstown” for his role in establishing this target range. In 1881, Captain George Hickman purchased 3 acres at present-day downtown Johnstown from J. Matson & Sons for $5,000 to establish a golf course there. The original clubhouse still stands today and can be visited free of charge during regular business hours (9am-4pm). One of Colonel William Biddle’s campaigns during the American Civil War took place near Johnstown on July 8th 1863 when General Ulysses S. Grant attacked Confederate forces under General Peebles at Monocacy Mountain near modern day Gettysburg PA while attempting to cross the Susquehanna River into Maryland via Monocacy Gap Bridge – an event that would become known as Battle OF Gettysburg. When Union troops arrived on scene they found Confederate troops entrenched around a large hillock within easy firing distance of several dozen muskets pits laid out across 200 yards or so inside what is now northwest corner lot #1 at 4406 Main Street where Camp Gregg had been set up two days prior; it should be noted that artillery fire could only be heard about one mile away due to heavy smoke from battle areas created by Rebel guns positioned along Gun Hill! Confederate casualties were reported as Killed or Wounded: 5 officers and 66 privates including Captains Johnston and Hickman; 1 ensign and 10 enlisted men also lost their lives that day… In all more than 50 Yankee soldiers were killed or wounded that day! This particular engagement helped contribute significantly to Union success at Gettysburg later that year – something which would not have been possible without reliable targets available nearby!
