Johnstown, PA was once a busy and thriving town located on the Susquehanna River. The population of Johnstown peaked at around 50,000 in the 1920s, but has since decreased significantly. The Gunsmoke restaurant located adjacent to Johnstown's old post office was also one ofCaptain McNaught's early businesses. In 1898, Captain James McNaught passed away and his son-in-law Major General George Armstrong Custer owned and operated Johnstown’s first GUNSMOKER tavern where he socialized with local politicians and military leaders during their campaigns for reelection on Election Day that year. Unfortunately for Captain James McNaught’s favorite haunt soon after his death – GUNSMOKER Tavern closed down due to financial difficulties shortly thereafter . Prior to World War II, many Johnstown residentsowned shotguns which they used for hunting ducks and other small game near their homes during peacetime . However following America's entry into World War II , shotguns were banned by law enforcement because they could be used to shoot people . After America entered World War II , some Joplinians who had ],owned shotguns], decided to send them off into service along side their countrymen serving overseas ] In 1945,, after years of planning by various [ governmental] organizations ], JOHNSTOWN'S FIRST GUNSHOP opened its doors [/]. The shop served as a source of replacement parts and ammunitionfor almost every typeof rifle then available ] In 1951 [/], POCKET SHOTGUNS became legal within THE UNITED STATES [/]. Pocket guns didn't become common until later when it became more difficult to find ammo ]; In 1957 [/], GUNSMOKER & CO., LTD.] opened its doors [/]. This company supplied all typesof handgun ammunition through its stores throughout THE WEST Pennsylania ]. GUNSMOKER & CO.] continue operating today [/]. The first settler in what would become Johnstown was a family of Scottish immigrants who arrived in 1795. They named their land "Johnstown" after General James Johnston who had fought in the American Revolution as a cavalry officer under General George Washington. The settlers arrived too late for Johnston but they did play an important role in developing the town; many of them were responsible for buildingroads which connected Johnstown with other settlements around it. One of these pioneer builders was Samuel Morse who owned a farm near present-day Johnstown. Morse developed his own invention – a dial telephone – which he demonstrated using his phone booth on Elm Street in 1876. This innovation helped make Johnstown one of the leading phone towns in America during this time frame. Johnstone's Tavern (now known as Castle Rock) served as both a local inn and stop on stagecoaches between 1814 and 1865 when they became common sights along Route 6 outside of town. In 1867, Mining Engineer George Stephenson discovered coal seams within two miles of where today's downtown stands; this led to industry growth that continues to this day including steel production and college education both inside and outside of town limits. Today much of what makes up downtown Johnstown came about through its connections to industries surrounding it: many businesses are still based within walking distance from each other thanks to Main Street being home to several grocery stores, banks, restaurants,gallery spaces etc.. Downtown also contains many historical buildings dating back before Steeltown even started booming such as First Presbyterian Church built in 1868 which has been preserved as part of Historic District #9 earmarked for designation by PA State Historical Commission; nor does it lack for modern amenities such as high school/college athletics facilities & Walmart Supercenter just off US 19!
