In 1865, when Andrew Carnegie purchased abandoned anthracite mines just north of town from George Hines & Co., he decided to develop them into a steelworks using his own money rather than sell stock to investors like other steelmakers at that time. Anthracitemining ceased operations in early 1964 due to environmental concerns but portions have been reopened as residential areas such as Springdale and Monaca Heights have grown up around the mills sites (now operated by Alcoa). Coal mining continued until 1965 when plant ashes created extensive pollution within town limits led to its closure effective January 1st 1966 after over 100 years of mining activity there - making it one of only three Pittsburgh-area plants still open today(the others being PPG Industries' Radnor Facility and UPMC's Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Plant). Today much remains unchanged from those days including JOHNSTOWN STEELWORKS which closed down back in 1964...and now occupies only a few acres off the banks of the Susquehanna river! It's pretty amazing how these old places can still hold onto their culture even 25+ years after they've stopped operating!
