Johnstown is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,491 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. Johnstown is located on the confluence of the Susquehanna River and West Branch Susquehanna River. The town was founded in 1795 by settlers from Lancaster County who named it for General James Braddock, who had been Killed in Action at Quebec City during the French and Indian War. The first gunsmith in Johnstown was Nicholas Pemberton, who started business in 1798. He manufactured pistols and rifles for local farmers and militiamen. In 1813, Pemberton built a mill that still operates as a commercial center today. Other early businesses included a sawmill (1814), wagon shop (1815), livery stable (1816-27), grocery store (1828-30), blacksmith shop (1831), post office (1832-34), schoolhouse (founded 1835) and two churches: First Presbyterian Church and Second Methodist Episcopal Church. Over time, many other businesses have emerged including restaurants, hotels/motels, banks/finance companies, medical clinics and more; making Johnstown one of the most vibrant cities in Pennsylvania. In 1876–77 three entrepreneurs pooled their money to build what became known as "The Great Western Railroad". This railroad connected Johnstown with Erie via JOHNSTOWN PLANTATION – then called "the Junction" – just south of present day downtown Johnstown. One result of this venture was that businessmen across the region began investing heavily inJohnstown’s fledgling metropolis – bolstering its economy until World War II when wartime production displaced much rural industry.]] During World War II munitions production shifted to Memphis Tennessee because there were adequate plants available to produce American bombs domestically.]] Bethlehem Steel Corporation built an extensive plant here after America's entry into World War II; but this plant closed prior to completion due to lack of demand from within America.]] Today JM&E Ammunition manufactures both small arms ammunition products including rifle bullets & shotgun shells under licenses from various government agencies around the world]]]

However, economic decline throughout the 20th century led to Johnstown’s population decreasing until 2000 when it increased again due to technological advances.

The Johnstown iron and steel plant closed in 2006 and much of its equipment was sold to China for use in their steel industry there. Johnstown is located on the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers, about east of Pittsburgh, northeast of Harrisburg, and northwest of Philadelphia. The name "Johnstown" is derived from John Adams who founded Johnstown in 1759. The first permanent settler in what would become Johnstown was Nicholas Pierpont who arrived in 1768 with his family. He built a log cabin on Lower Pike (later known as Main Street) which he named "Pierpont's Station". Other early settlers included David Williamson (1772-1826), James Hartsfield (1775-1847), George Wickersham (1779-1835), Isaac Ritchie (1800-1860), Michael McGowan (1800-1888) and Alexander McMillin (1802- 1881). A post office called Johnstown was established in 1814, and remained open until 1865. In 1827, commissioners laid out a town on high ground near present day Market Square by naming it after Sir George Washington which it retains to this day. However, due to lack of funding the town did not take off until 1841 when Bethlehem Steel Corporation set up shop here originally producing rails for cars before eventually becoming an engine manufacturer too. In 1892 local resident Daniel Sheehan donated land to create what became today's University Park Blocks complex including football fields as well as buildings such as Sheean Hall which still stands today! Today's University Park Blocks includes several blocks away from where Sheean Hall once stood - one block being called Sheean Alley - all evidence that this community battled hard against large corporations throughout their history! While heavy industry has been replaced by increased trade within the region over recent decades – with aluminum smelting starting up just north of downtown Pittsburg last year – many residents remain nostalgic for years gone by when things were more traditional such as farming or logging; some have even started restoring abandoned homes within city limits!
