The first white man to come to what is now Indianapolis was John Bowen, who set up a trading post there in 1793. In 1814, following the Mexican-American War, President James K. Polk signed an executive order creating Indiana as a territory of Mexico. This event marked the end of Indiana's role as an agricultural and commercial center within Ohio and Kentucky. The territories were reorganized into states on December 12, 1827 after Tennessee became one of the newly formed states along with West Virginia and Maryland. The name for Indiana – "the land where Jim Ladd played ball" – stuck and Indianapolis grew rapidly as a business center because of its location near several major railroads. By 1830, over 50 businesses used Indianapolis as their headquarters! In 1837–38 Congress passed legislation creating four new counties within Indiana – Hendricks (in today's eastern suburbs), Kane (west of Fort Wayne), Marion (northwest of Evansville) and Putnam (southwest of Bloomington). Although they were not included in the state until 1850 due to overcrowding caused by increased population growth within each county boundaries – these counties would play an important role in both local government and American popular culture during this time period.

In 1611, Dutch explorer Jan Mayen discovered what is now Indiana and Pennsylvania when he sailed along the eastern seaboard.
