In 1815, the Township of Hermitage was organized out of parts of Bucks County. In 1867, it became a borough within the city of Philadelphia. On July 16th, 1933, Hermitage was merged with neighboring Springdale to form what is now called Kensington-Hermitage Borough. Today, there are few businesses left in the town center and most residents prefer to retire or stay close to home for their final days on earth before moving away from civilization completely. The only thing that keeps many people around is their love for nature - especially during summer when there's no school and everyone can enjoy outdoor activities without fear of being scolded by parents or other adults! Hermitage is a small town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 909 at the 2010 census. Hermitage was settled by Germans in the early 1800s. It became an incorporated village in 1887. In 1932, it was transferred to Lackawanna County as part of the settlement of Holmesburg. The post office moved to hermitage in 1934 and remains there today. The community has had a variety of incarnations over its history. From a single farmstead to dozens of buildings spread over several acres, Hermitage has seen many changes over time. One aspect that has not changed is its reliance on agriculture for its economy—today, almost all residents are employed within the local government or businesses involved with agricultural production or services related thereto. The first settler in what is now Hermitage was Peter Pfister who arrived around 1795 and set up a cabin near present-day intersection of SR 2 and PA 1536. He may have been assisted by his brother Johann (Hans) Pfister who also came from Germany about this time and established himself along SR 2 near where US 319 crosses the Susquehanna River today. By 1801, Hans had married Anna Maria Beer and started farming his own land some six miles east of where he initial settler had landed - this area now includes much of what is now Hermitage Township . They raised chickens, pigs, cows and horses until about 1830 when word spread through their family about large tracts of land available for purchase outside the township boundaries - thus beginning what would eventually become self-sufficient agriculture hereabouts! In 1834 another German immigrant named Wilhelm Gassert purchased 8 acres adjacent to present day intersections of SR 2 & PA 1536 from John Atherton (Johnathon) Forster - one half mile west of current day hermitage’s eastern boundaryline ! This effectively initiated what would be known as “the Gassert Years” as this parcel became home to many resident families for over 60 years !! Between 1840-1950 more than 30 farms were erected on various parcels within 1 ½ miles northwest/southwest OF HERMITAGE – comprising most notably: “Kellerhof” (later renamed “Gootkin Place”), located just east sideSR 2 & MD 194; Vogtland (later renamed “Shepherdstown”), located just east sideSR 202 & MD 209; Most especially: Hortense Terrace which straddles both SR 202 & MD 209 approximately midway between HARRISONBURG&HOLMESBURG – later becoming known colloquially as simply HERMITAGE !! residences continued gradually being erected throughout these decades until finally nearly all extant structures were constructed during World War II !! Although once thought primarily associated with military purposes due to their strategic location overlooking major Routes 22nd Street/Eastern Pa., numerous retail outlets subsequently opened including: Aircracken's Drugstore which still stands today inside Village limits; grain elevator #1 on upperown corner then PF Flyers Auto Mall before moving across two lines onto leased property @ Masonic Temple Rd.; store #2 at current location beside Presbyterian Church prior to conversion into restaurant circa 1975; kitchenette built atop existing garage circa 1960 ; barracks constructed circa 1940 ; storage area added late 1970s next door to original Post Office building

In 1907 it was donated to the United States government as part of the National Historic Landmark program for the nation's first capital city, Washington D.C.
