The first Europeans to sight what is now Hermitage were Captain John Smith and his crew on their landing party at the mouth of the Susquehanna River on November 14, 1607. They charted present-day Philadelphia as well as some other points on that day. In 1795, Jameson and others bought 6,000 acres (24 km²) about south of what is now Hermitage from Nicholas Catlett for £2 per acre. In 1802, they erected a gristmill and foundry there which still stands today. At this time only a few hundred people lived in Butler County but by 1814 there were more than 10,000 residents here. In the early 1800s two brothers named John McMurtry ran a successful farmstead near present-day Allentown called Brushy Run which furnished milk to many local houses and also raised chickens and pigs for market demand. Other family members included James McMurtry (1815–92), who served as sheriff of Butler County twice; Andrew McNaught (1827–93), an attorney general in Ulysses S. Grant’s administration; Archibald McNaught (1830–1904); Seamus Doyle McNaught (1841–1926); Donald J. Byrne; and John Ahern McNaught (1925-present). 1 In 1817 an act was passed by Congress providing for township organization within Butler County with four townships being organized viz: Beaver Falls Township, Berks Township, Girard Township and Newton Township each with its own supervisors or commissioners appointed by the state government under direction of the county commissionership then existing therein There was no town named after Anthony Tellegen until 1860 when he donated land to be used as a school district in that township name . By 1870 when all but one of those original townships had been disbanded Beaver Falls had become Defiance while Girard became Antrim . Main Street in Defiance runs directly parallel to US 1A highway east of town limits

In 1801 he erected a frame house on one acre (0.40 hectare) of land which served as his home until his death in 1839. From this humble beginning, George's family developed their farm into an important factor in the growth of the community over time; they continued to hold title to property until it was sold off during World War II. During much of its history, Hermitage has been primarily known for its furnituremaking industry; however, recent generations have brought attention to other aspects of its historical past including its role as a stop on the Underground Railroad during slavery days and as a center for artistic creativity during prohibition era times
