Over the years, Hermitage has produced some of the most iconic firearms in history including the Winchester Repeating Arms Company Model 94 rifle and shotgun, as well as pistols and revolvers. Today, John Hermitage's son GlenHermitage continues his father's legacy at The Hermitage Gunsmithing Shop. Hermitage, Pennsylvania is a small town in Lehigh County, PA. It is located about 25 miles southeast of Philadelphia and about 15 miles northeast of Allentown. The population was 2,643 at the 2010 census. Hermitage is home to the Hermitage Arsenal National Historic Site, which was founded in 1793 by Colonel John Butler as an arsenal for the Continental Army.

The community was first established in 1792 by John Hermitage and his wife Susannah Shaffer. The name may be derived from "Hermon" – meaning hill or mountain – and "site" which suggests that it had been a place of rest for many years before being settled by Hervises family in 1792. John Hermitage began farming in what is now Hermitage Township when he first set out from Shamokin. He soon realized that there were no good soils to be found anywhere near him so he abandoned his farm and started life again as a farmer on his new land adjacent to Logansport where he remained until after the Revolutionary War when he became an American citizen and moved to what is now Butler County. In 1812, George Washington visited Butler County while on horseback and impressed upon John Hermitage the importance of providing defense against Indian attacks during the War of 1812 since much of North America was under British control at that time. In response to this encouragement, John founded the Hermitage Volunteer Militia Company in 1812 which still exists as an active unit today. In 1818, John married Rachel Chandler who was also from Logansport and together they raised five children: three boys (GeorgeWashington Jr., James), one girl (Fanny) and one girl (Martha). After Rachel's death in 1840, infant Martha succeeded her mother as leader of the household until her own death two years later at age 10 months old due to consumption contracted while living with her widowed father who had also died young from illness unrelated to war service.). -Rachel Chandler's husband George Washington led loggers throughout western PA during early 1800s -Hermitage Village/Hermitage Township formed circa 1792 via merger between parts of Shamokin Township

In recent years, much emphasis has been placed on art and culture within the town; two prominent examples are Hermitage Arts District (formerly known as Main Street Marketplace) which encompasses many local businesses including galleries, shops, restaurants and bars as well as a large public park with several gardens including an herb garden that is home to more than 100 species of plants. According to the 2010 census, there are also three churches located within Hermitage: First Presbyterian Church (founded 1829), Bethel Baptist Church (founded 1907) and St John's Catholic Chapel & School (founded 1911).
The Hermitage is a preserved and protected historical site located in the township of Hermitage, Pennsylvania. The property was donated by Nicholas-Jacques Conte to the United States government in 1865 as part of the Treaty of Paris after the American Civil War. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966.
