Hermitage is a small town in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the borough of Altoona and the southwestern edge of Hermitage Township. The first permanent settler in what is now Hermitage Township was Nicholas de Ribault, who arrived in 1786. In 1815, Theodore Dwight founded a small academy here which he called "The Hermitage". A year later, he donated land to create a township. The township's first meeting took place on July 12th, 1816. In 1877-78 the Fifth Avenue Railroad came through Hermitage and created an influx of people and businesses into the area; this led to an increase in development around Hermitage High School and other local businesses. In 1916 Delaware Valley Steel Company built a major steel plant here which employed over 4,000 workers during its heyday; however, by 1975 it had closed down due to economic problems within the steel industry nationwide. A few years later (in 1979), Niagara Power Corporation bought out Delaware Valley Steel Company and started construction of their new massive power plant which would come to be known as Niagara Park II; however by 1997 it had also been abandoned due to environmental concerns around nearby Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Airport.

The first post office in Hermitage was established on December 13, 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on May 3, 1865. Hermitage has a rich history dating back to 1754 when Gottlieb Leisler purchased 1/4 acre (0.18 km2) of land east of present-day Hermitage for $10 from Abraham Darby Jr., one of the early settlers in Berks County. From this purchase four acres (1 ha) were developed into what is now known as Hermitage Park which contains many historic buildings including the Leisler Mansion and its dependencies including two churches and a schoolhouse that are still operating today as private homes with primary status under Pennsylvania State law but are open to the public for tours every day from 9am-3pm except Wednesdaydays when they are closed because of winter maintenance activities. In 1851 Nathaniel Bacon donated 50 acres (20 ha) to form what became Northampton Township adjacent to his farmstead where he built a large log cabin known as Bacon's Cabin which remains standing today as a museum property administered by Northampton Borough government although it currently functions as an apartment complex managed by PA Historic sites management services LLC d/b/a Pennsburg Heritage Trust; also located within these boundaries are some significant Revolutionary War era battlefields such as Black Ford Heights and Hancock's Ferry Bridge which still remain operational today providing excellent opportunities for outdoor exploration not easily accessible elsewhere in Berks County
