In 1795, George Washington was the first U.S. president to sign a bill creating the United States Military Academy at West Point. The purpose of the academy was to train future generals and admirals in rifle shooting. Hermitage is located in upstate New York, and it would take until 1864 for Americans to start traveling there for military purposes. In 1817, Colonel John Armstrong founded Armstrong's Rifle factory in Hermitage, NY that would become one of the leading rifle manufacturers in the world. The early firearms used black powder or muzzle loading powder which caused great respiratory problems due to their intense heat and smoke production. To avoid these issues, guns were designed with cylindrical barrels that emitted a small amount of cool air when fired which cooled down the gun barrel after each shot. This system allowed shooters to breathe easily while firing without having their lungs abused by warm air from the barrel

Hermitage is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. It was founded in 1788 by George Hermitage and his wife Sarah. The community was named after the Russian Hermitage Monastery, which was located nearby. The Monastery closed in 1853. The first permanent settler in what is now Hermitage was George Washington Carver Jr., who arrived there in 1793. He operated a grocery store and raised pigs and hogs until he died in 1847 at the age of 63 years old. His son George Washington Carver III followed him to the land which he had purchased from the state of Pennsylvania for $1,000 cash. In 1853, Abraham Lincoln visited what is today Hermitage while on his way to Garment Mill to deliver speeches about laissez faire economics that day were also made here at home by local farmers before traveling back east for an address at Ford’s Theatre on April 14th that year In 1860, John McClernand bought some of the land where today's Hermitage stands from surveyors who had been working on a road connecting Butler and Lawrence Counties along with other towns in western PA To provide easier access to trade with eastern markets McClernand donated much of this property including most of what is now south side of Hermitage Road between Maple Avenue (now part of Hwy 190) and US Route 611 just east of centerline as well as approximately one-half mile northward extending east along US Route 611 past current day intersection with Hwy 190 These parcels became known as "McClernand’s Valley". McClernand Heights are located adjacent to these holdings southeast corner northeast corner west side northwest corner currently owned by Bethlehem Steel company lot . Most likely when McClernand donated these lots due their easy access to highways and commerce they were valued at around $10-$12 per acre I believe more since real estate prices have increased considerably over time Especially since timber has become increasingly rare over time Many people incorrectly think that McClernand donation limited development potential or caused decline but this may not be accurate given recent developments especially near intersection mentioned above Some residents still reside hereaboutsalbeit scattered throughout different parts of town than when he lived politely
