The community grew rapidly after a canal was built through the area in 1825; it became an important transportation hub for coal and other goods transported down the canal to Philadelphia. In 1865, when the Erie Canal was completed and travelers could now travel directly to New York City from PA without stopping at Hermitage (or any other town), its growth continued apace. The importance of Hermitage declined as railroads arrived in the region during the 19th century; but due to its location within easy commuting distance of major metropolitan areas, it has again become a popular tourist destination over recent years. Today, Hermitage remains one of only a few villages in America with complete self-contained commercial districts (the others being Bethlehem and Easton). The Village had two churches until they both burned down in 1879: First African Methodist Episcopal Church (now St John's United Methodist Church) on Market Street and Second Presbyterian Dutch Reformed Church on Third Street. A new church building was dedicated by President Ulysses S Grant on October 25th 1892 - four years after his visit to PA for a dedication rally for that year's Moravian College at Gettysburg National Military Park On December 12th 1907 Pastor Gertrude McFarlane officiated at groundbreaking ceremonies for Our Lady Of Mt Carmel Catholic Parish which served as merger between Our Lady Of Mount Carmel parish established in 1904 and St Joseph's Roman Catholic Parish also operating out of Mt Carmel since 1897 On January 1st 1912 Mrs C Fenton erected a cross on top of former General Store Building opposite old post office property line She donated this property which later became known as "Hermitage Heights" soon afterward

Hermitage is a borough in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,936 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading Township government and is located on the south side of the Susquehanna River. The local history of Hermitage goes back to 1771 when John Heiman founded what are now known as Heimarstadt and Hermitage Roads in present-day Hermitage. From this small start, many families have played important roles in its development over the years: The Beattie family (19th century landowners), Smiths (early white settlers), Glessner (railroad builders and promoters), and numerous other residents who made their mark on its landscape or culture. In 1892, whenReading Township was formed from parts of Berks County, Hermitage became one of its first wards. In 1955, it was annexed by Reading Borough which also included much of neighboring Mendenhall Township. In 1976, after a referendum vote by residents, Hermitage became an independent borough once again under control of its own governing body - the Borough Council - with a Mayor/Council team elected at large instead of partisan affiliation. Today's economy largely depends on manufacturing within Readington Township; however some light industry has been established in nearby Haverfordwest and Allentown as well. Some 20% of all jobs in Berks County are supported by local businesses; most notably agriculture through processing companies such as Kellogg & Co., Templeton seed company and others involved in fruits/veggies/nuts production; while smaller businesses provide services like construction services or janitorial workforces. Agriculture remains an important economic sector with significant employment throughout Berks County but recent expansions into more modern industries have led to declines in agricultural employment throughout much of rural areas within Berks County due to changing global markets; however; there are still many families engaged in agriculture here today! For centuries trade between Europe and North America passed through Lancaster because that is where one could find goods needed for both trades: salt water fishing for herring along the Delaware River during wintertimeand lumber from those same mountains during summertime. Many items traded were also used locally including cloth making toolsmithing saddlesfor wagons etc., potters' dyers' dyes etc., soapstone carvings etc., furs thru trapping etc., lime for plastering walls etc... These days there are few physical reminders remaining from these old days other than a few artifacts collected over time such as a 19th century hatchet found buried near his former forge site or artefacts associated with early railroads such as old spikes found at nearby Pocono Junction Railroad Depot
