In 1906, it became a township under the control of York County government and remained so until its merger with Lawrence Township on April 1, 2007. Hermitage is a town in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Allentown-Easton-Andover, PA–NJ–DE-MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Abram Hermitage in 1793. He built a log cabin on a hilltop and named it after himself. In 1827, Abram's grandson John Hermitage donated land to form the current town site. Abraham and his wife Catherine had four children: one son born in 1789 and three daughters who survived infancy. They also raised six grandchildren before moving to their new home in 1847. In 1863, the Gettysburg Campaign began and General Ulysses S Grant's army passed through Hermitage on its way southward. A local man named James Hays donated land for a public square near where Interstate 81 now runs east-west. In 1925, George Washington Carver moved to Hermitage from Tuskegee Alabama with his family and started an agricultural colony called Carver Agricultural Institute which provided food for many people in Appalachia during the Great Depression years
