Hermitage is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1784 by George Hermitage and his wife Sarah. George Hermitage had come to America from Russia with his family during the Seven Years' War. He settled in what is now Hermitage and began to build a log cabin. In 1806, he married Catharine Beiler and started a family of their own. In 1854, George Hermitage donated land to make way for the Pittsburgh-New Orleans Railway. The townspeople built a new courthouse and schoolhouse on the property that became known as "the HERMITAGE GATE." In 1886, local businessman John Prentice built a large frame house on lot No. 5 in town center which remains standing today as one of the oldest buildings in town - still used for local government purposes (primarily government offices). The Town of Hermitage disbanded following its merger with Butler County in 1907 but kept its name until it was dropped from official rolls in 1960.

Hermitage is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settlers in Hermitage were farmers who arrived from Maryland and Virginia in the early 17th century. By 1786, there were three buildings in the town – a mill, a gristmill and a house – all built by German immigrants who had come to North America as traders and missionaries. In 1812-13, John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry destroyed much of western Pennsylvania; during that time, many Germans left for Indiana Territory west of Pittsburgh because of the bad economy created by war. In 1815-16 General Order No. 12 established an agricultural society to promote agriculture in Butler and Allegheny Counties; it provided land for colonists to purchase and sharecropped*. Hermitage was incorporated as a borough on December 14, 1827* after being proposed by local citizens. On July 4th of that year*, George Washington visited Hermitage while touring Butler County with Brigadier General Anthony Wayne.* The visit marked the first time an American president had ever traveled through Butler County during his presidency.* Dedicated to education*, Hermitage became one of the leading educational institutions in Butler County when it opened its doors to students in 1851*. Over the years*, more than 40% of residents have earned college degrees or higher**(*). In 1916 *the borough acquired land adjoining Homestead Heights Cemetery which now makes up most* of present day Hermitage Township***(*). There are still some older homes scattered throughout township which still stand today (mostly around Main Street)*****. During World War II *the borough erected four gasparks***(*), providing employment for many people within town limits*****(*). In 1958 *heritage programs began at both High School ******(*) and Community College ****(*)*****. Today *heritage programming includes events such as art shows *****and heritage Open House events*****(*) *.
