In 1812, a man named Nicholas-Jacques Conte migrated from France to America.Conte became one of the first Europeans to settle in what is now Hermitage Township, Pennsylvania. Conte was instrumental in developing western Pennsylvania and he also founded the first school in what is now Hermitage Township. The land that today includes Hermitage Township was once part of gaming territory controlled by the Pennsylania governor. In 1851, the General Assembly passed an act which designated all of present-day Hermitage Township as part of Allegheny County. The township was formally organized on November 3, 1853. While knife production has long been a key aspect of the local economy, it's not until the late 19th century that knives truly take off in popularity here in Pennsylvania. It wasn't until around 1850 when Europeans began importing knifes made from Japanese Damascus steel into America thatKnife production really took off here at home." After emancipation followed by more industrialization and more people moving into townships throughout central PA, knife production picked up again thanks to immigrants who were drawn to jobs opportunities here." Hermitage is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Hermitage Township was George Washington Carver, who purchased land in 1827. He built a cabin on the east side of the creek that flows through his township and named it "Carver's Cabin". In 1868, he sold his land to Elijah Hodge for $5 Per acre. Hodge owned about 640 acres (248 hectares) of wooded land in what is now Hermitage Township and used it for farming and grazing until he donated it to the University of Pittsburgh in 1907 as part of its Latrobe Valley campus. The university has since expanded its holdings by purchasing additional tracts of land around Hermitagetown and within walking distance of each other. Today, most people identify themselves as Pittsburghers or historians from nearby Pittsburgh proper although there are sizable minorities from other surrounding towns including radlesville and Monroeville which lie within Butler County but are not part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. In addition to being one of two remaining villages completely unincorporated within Butler County (the other being Westmoreland), Hermitage also retains a significant degree of autonomy as an independent municipality with its own school board, public library, fire protection district and zoning authority over only residential areas within its boundaries- much like many smaller villages across Pennsylvania during this time period. This unique status has led to some heated debates among residents over issues such as how best to spend tax dollars while still maintaining core services such as education and infrastructure upkeep; however, majorities have always sided with keeping their village alive and well despite occasional challenges from outside forces more interested in developing larger satellite towns close by or simply eliminating all vestiges of community life entirely than supporting traditional local economy needs.

Hermitage is a town and CDP in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 996 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Hermitage is adjacent to the town. The first European settler in what would become Hermitage Township was George Washington Ellis in 1824.Ellis bought 640 acres (248 ha) of land from John Armstrong for $2,000 cash and built a cabin there on November 25, 1824. In 1828, he sold his holdings to Adam Biddle who named it "Hermitage." In 1835-36, General David Logan's Expedition stopped at Hermitage on its way to explore western Pennsylvania and southern Ohio as part of his exploration into the region known then as "the Great Lakes". General Logan's group included Daniel Boone, Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk among others. In 1840-41 when Abraham Lincoln visited Butler County for a speech at Pittsburg College he stayed with Drury Lane Tavern owner John Hetherington in Hermitage where he dined with President James Ketchum later that day before continuing on to West Point.. Lincoln's former home now stands within walking distance of the township limits in Hermitage proper while other significant remnants from his time here include: Hetherington House (now used as a museum), Lincoln Quarters (now served as apartments by Loyola University Chicago), First Presbyterian Church (1840-1849) and Hetherington House School (19th century). Many people associated with this period including artist Edward Hopper lived or workeduated in or near Hermitage including painter Annie Smith whose father 1870-1902 ran a hotel/motel near present day Elmira Road and State Route 422 east of town Limits; sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens moved here circa 1915; doctor Arthur Ashe played professional tennis here 1924-1929; actor/director William Saroyan filmed his 1911 play "A Streetcar Named Desire" here 1951; composer Leonard Bernstein wrote music for over 50 films between 1945 - 1974 at nearby Carnegie Hall...Today still many residents commute intoPittsburgh through Amtrak's Penn Station just minutes away making this community proud!
