Hermitage is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first recorded mention of Hermitage was in 1682 when it was called "Hercules", and became known as "Hercule's Mount". In 1757, John Smith bought 1/4 mile (1 km) of land from the Indians for £10. He built a small cabin there and named it Hermitage after his mentor and teacher, Hercules. In 1824-25 George Washington stop over at Hermitage on his way to West Point. In 1870s, James Kapp made some improvements to a sawmill that he operated near Hermitage until 1876 when he sold it to A.F. Hutton & Co., who ran it into bankruptcy in 1892 before finally selling it to Isaac Neely in 1902 for $1 million$. That same year Hutton donated all its tools and equipment to Carnegie Museum of Art where they are still being used today as part of their collection Guggenheim Museum has also leased some tools from Hutton mill which they now use in their research lab at Pittenger University (Pittsburgh). The museum currently owns most of the mill machinery including the water wheel and other components that were once used at the milling plant but have been replaced by more modern technology. The Neely family continued running the mill until around 1940 when ownership passed through several hands before finally being bought by Samuel Wirth Toyota Motor Manufacturing Company who kept it operating until 1984 when it came down for redevelopment into an industrial park known as "Hermitage Industrial Park" Today remnants of the original hermitage building can be seen along with some outbuildings surrounding what is nowmiheritagelibrary complex housing various offices includingToyota Research Institutes

Hermitage is a small town in Pennsylvania, United States. It was founded in 1798 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his wife Jeanne-Marie de la Motte. The settlement was named after the Russian monastery of Hermitage, which Conte had visited during his travels in the early 1800s. In 1812, Hermitage became the seat of a vicar general for all of western Pennsylvania. In 1868, George Washington moved from Philadelphia to Hermitage to live out his remaining years there. In 1927, Hermitage became part of the Susquehanna County municipality system and has been an unincorporated community since that time. The community has experienced several name changes over its history; including "Herschville," "Hershey," and most recently "Hermitage Township." Located on the Unicoi River approximately 20 miles northeast of Harrisburg, Hermitage is one of the smallest communities in Pennsylvania with a population over 1,000 people. The first settler at present day Hermitage were Nicholas-Jacques Conte and Jeanne-Marie de la Motte who arrived in 1798 from Russia along with their two children Nicolas (1797) and Marie (1799). They erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street which served as their home until 1810 when they relocated to what is now West Third Street where they continued to live until 1812 when they bought land east of present day Second Avenue for $8 per acre from John Dickson near Yorktown Heights on Long Island Sound. From this location they surveyed three tracts totaling 100 acres that formed today's eastern half of Hermitage Township . On October 9th 1812 geohermitsgate post office opened with mail brought by horse and wagons from Kensington but no passengers or mail ever reached them because boats could not come upriver due to high water levels at points where the river widened into ditches cutting off access upstream. After hearing about this Location through letters sent back home by friends living in Upper Canada he ordered surveyors to start mapping out roads etc so someone would eventually reach them which was done within two weeks with Pierre Duguay being appointed first Deputy Surveyor General title later changed to Surveyor General #2.. This location would remain unnamed until 1840 when it was renamed “Hershon” after Nicholas Herschel who also lived thereabouts at some point during this time period…. Mrs Herschel transferred her family here around 1830’s she died about 1870’s Mr Herschel remarried sometime between 1840 & 1850’s He left 3 daughters here Mrs Herschel next removed family moving back East then settled near Allentown PA Mr Herschel died natural causes about 1890….. By 1881 there were only 5 houses left in township…. However following Union War efforts many residents chose to move away like most everyone else throughout Lehigh Valley especially those living along Northumberland Rd & Delaware Ave Some returned during Reconstruction Era but most decided it wouldn't be worth it anymore than trying again IN 1946 HERMITAGE TOWNSHIP ADMINISTRATION WAS CREATED BY THE LEGISLATURE HEREBY ALLocating Funds To SUPPORT ITS OPERATIONS FROM TAXES ON REAL ESTATE LOCATED IN HERSCHVILLE AND SUFFOLK TOWNSHIIP NAME CHANGED TO HERITAGE TOWNSHIP COURT EAST OF HERSHEY ROAD NAME CONTINUES TO BE HERMITAGE AREA CODE
