The original post office was established in 1806 and was called Swenzerstown until it changed its name to Hermitage in 1828. In 1836, James Waddell donated land for a Methodist church and named the township after him. Reverend James Waddell had come to America from England in 1825 and started preaching at Swenzerstown Chapel near Lancaster, Pennsylvania before moving to Pennsylvania in 1830 due to health concerns about his home country's religious climate at that time. Reverend Waddell's wife, Martha Ann (née Damron), accompanied him to America and became active in early Methodist ministry here as well.
In 1865, when Tapiola Township was created from parts of Lehigh County that were detached during the American Civil War, Hermitage became part of Tapiola Township; however, it retained its own identity until 1975 when it attained full township status under Lehigh County government control with all residents residing within its borders.

Hermitage is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 535 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The town was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1788. The first post office was established in Hermitage on December 10, 1821. In 1824, the first railroads were built through Butler and Cambria counties and Hermitage became one of their towns. In 1828, Joseph Pulitzer purchased land north of Hermitage for $2,000 and began to build what would become Oneonta (now Allentown). On July 14, 1893, Oneonta was incorporated as a village with a population of 1001 residents. In 1907 Hershey Foods Corporation merged with SEPTA Railroad Company to form Penn Central Railroad Company (PCR). On July 15, 1920 Penn Central Railroad Company merged into New York Central Railway Company and its successor Conrail division Erie Northern Railway; this resulted in the merger of two small towns - Hershey with 1% voting rights and Allentown with 99% voting rights - into one large community called "Hermitage". This change meant that all transportation within the larger community took place through Conrail's Erie Northern Railway company railroad stations located near Allentown or Hershey proper. Since then there have been several name changes: including Pennsbury Township (1957-1959), Hermitage Borough (1966-1968), finally Hermitage Township again (1999-2001). Bethlehem Steel Corporation leased mill site from PCR in 1984; after initial success but failure to revive business led to sale back to PCR in 1990 which closed it down for good effective January 1st of that year; followed by closure of neighboring steel mills around Bethlehem creating an industrial area known as "the hood" or "steel town". Over time various businesses moved out leaving behind areas such as factories housing 8500 people now known as North Side Villages which are still home to many working class families today despite being surrounded by high-end developments such as Park Hills Shopping Center which opened up next door in 2006 complete with its own shopping mall complex intermingling residential and commercial properties along side some beautiful parkland once used by Lehigh University students for athletic purposes before they relocated elsewhere.
Hermitage is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. Hermitage is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of what is now Hermitage were Native Americans who hunted game and gathered nuts from the surrounding forest. The name "Hermitage" was given to a small hamlet on the banks of the Monongahela River by General Anthony Wayne in 1799 after he discovered an old Indian settlement there. In 1802, Major John Forbes erected a gristmill and millrace here which led to heavy industry in this early community. In 1814, James Kempton built his own home on Hermitage Creek near present-day Mount Lebanon while serving as brigadier general in the American army during the Mexican–American War. He became one of America's largest landholders and developed large tracts of territory along both sides of the Ohio River before his death in 1848. His widow continued to live on Hermitage until her death in 1840; their son took over management of their estate until it was sold off in 1865 to Julius Rosenwald Jr., president and founder of Sears, Roebuck & Co.. The borough was established on December 12, 1909 by an act of the Pennsylvania Legislature following annexation by Pittsburgh of several adjacent towns including Greensburg (1892), Unicoi (1896), Monongalia (1910), Sewickley Heights (1911), Thornhill (1912) and Westmoreland Township (1920). At that time, most residents lived within 10 miles (16 km) of Pittsburgh proper; however, some people located upriver such as North Side residents living near Clearfield Dam had no easy access to city services or its supermarkets. The borough's first building was a two-story frame garage with dimensions similar to those used today for parking lots across Independence Avenue from where Borough Hall currently stands. A five-year construction project from 1922 through 1924 added a new gymnasium/auditorium/community center complex that included a pay phone and civic offices overlooking Independence Avenue; this structure still stands today across from Borough Hall although much damage has been done to it over time due primarily to vandalism by teenagers and others interested in disrupting public uses者 . 2 other buildings were also constructed during this period: Now known as Recreation Building #1 – Also damaged but still standing next to Recreation Building #2 across Independence Avenue - This building housed a playground/lawn bowling alley/recreational facilities for children until 1998 when it closed down due to budget cuts caused by then Mayor Luke Ravensthorpe whose mayoralty saw many controversial decisions made like reducing funding for parks etc.; recreation building #1 later burned down note: The photo above shows what may have been RecreationBuilding 1 before it burned down
