In 1907, a depot was constructed at Hermitage railway station which served as an important transportation link between Pittsburgh and neighboring communities including Forbes borough and Venango township. A few years later, construction began on a large industry park which would include mills, foundries and other businesses; it never materialized due to financial problems within the company that led to its bankruptcy shortly thereafter. However, portions of the park still remain today including several baseball diamonds/ fields as well as a reservoir that provides drinking water to many residents of nearby Monroeville Township Population growth has caused residential neighborhoods to develop around the original downtown core; these areas are sometimes referred to as "The Village", "The Garden" or simply "Hermitage". Many residents continue to resided there until their death or move out for other reasons such as joining another municipality or moving closer to family members outside Pennsylvania .
