In 1839–40 fence construction began on what would become known as "The Hermitage." This large brick fence ran around both sides of what is today Quaker Hill Road; it provided security for hermits living within its confines and discouraged others from trying to intrusion into their territory without prior consent from authorities. By 1840 there were eighteen residents living within .
