One result of this trend was that by 1860 only about 100 persons lived in Hermitage Township; most residents were employed elsewhere in the township or downstream within Berks County when it merged with Reading Borough on January 1, 1867. In 1892 William Haughton developed an artificial harbor on Whatcom Creek north of town which served as an important commercial center for local farmers until World War II when development removed most of the creek's vegetation including both banks of its bed so that it became impassable for shipping except via barge; since then it has been used primarily as pastureland for livestock purposes A post office operated at Hermitage from October 15, 1868 until November 3rd 1870 under name "Harrisburg". On July 1st 1898 Delaware Valley Railway opened up a branch line into town from Yorktown Junction near where today's Main Street meets PA Route 422 providing easy access for farm goods entering central Pennsylvania from Delaware Valley Railroad yards at Yorktown Junction & Carrick Falls locations
