In 1868, a group of men who referred to themselves as the Hermitage Riflemen decided to start a rifle club in the small town of Hermitage, Pennsylvania. The purpose of the club was to promote shootin' and protect local farmers from rustlers. At first, there were just six members, but over time more and more men joined the club. In 1883, the club changed its name to the Hermitage Riflemen's Association, and began publishing its own magazine called The Rifleman. Over time, membership grew further and further until by 1907 it had reached twenty-six members. The HERA continued publication of their magazine until 1919 when World War I interrupted their production schedule. In that year they merged with another rifle society in Pennsylvania called the Allegheny County Riflemen's Association (ACRA). In 1919 ACRA published its own magazine called The Ranger which remains one of the most popular gun magazines today. The HERA also played an important role in developing America's firearms laws. For many years they were responsible for writing regulations that governed how guns could be used within our country. Additionally, they frequently worked with other organizations to help advance firearm safety measures such as recalls for defective products or increasing gun literacy programs across America. Hermitage is a small town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading Area. Hermitage is located on the Susquehanna River and has a primarily agricultural focus. The name Hermitage comes from early English settlers who lived around the bend in what is now Hermitage Township. One of these pioneers, John Sheemaker (c1755-1824), built a log cabin in 1792 near present-day Hermitage. In 1812, George Washington Carpenter bought 4 acres (1 hectare) of land along the Susquehanna River in what are now Hermitage and Northampton townships for $100 (). He named his new township after himself—George Washington Village or Carpenterstown. In 1826, he donated another piece of property to the municipality which included all of present-day West Elm Township as well as parts of Ford City and South Lebanon Township. This was followed by donations from other landowners until all but two blocks of present-day Montrose were added to the municipality on July 15, 1836 (). The first post office opened in 1837 (), serving residents of Carpenterstown andwest Elmtown before moving to Montrose later that year (). The first pastor was Rev. Daniel Hahneman (1807-1868). Reverend Hahneman also founded First Congregational Church () which still exists today within hermetically sealed walls inside the old Ladies Home Museum complex adjacent to Parkersburg University's campus in downtown Parkersburg PA/. Heinrich Wilhelm Schlemmer served as pastor from 1849 until his death eight years later (); however, his parishioners disagreed with him regarding some issues related to church membership such as segregated seating for men and women at services etc.). In 1860s an addition calledthe Second Presbyterian Church () was built on what are now Main Street and Court Avenue west of Center Road east of Hillcrest Drive; it remains our current worship place today. Reverend James Auerbach served as pastor from 1865 until his death four years later () before being succeeded by Reverend Lewis Kappler (). From 1870 through 1888 there were five pastors: Reverend Samuel Ladd (), Reverend Julius Weininger (), Reverend Otto Ducharmey (), Reverend Joseph Radermeyer (), and Pastor Emeritus Drury Wiman (. . .) After Ducharmey's retirement an succession crisis ensued with only one candidate being elected over three ballots (. . .) Finally upon incumbent Drury Wiman's death in 1924 both churches were united under one roof when Pastor Harry David Schiffer became officiating pastor(). At this time too denominational lines had blurred somewhat with Presbyterians ministering to Methodists/ Episcopalians/ Jews etc.. However despite this unification there remain many denominations worshipping here including United Methodist church services held every Sunday morning since 1931 inclusive! Today much like then - "Shep" means farmstead or barn off center street & "Hag" means house or structure - most people hereabouts live single (& sometimes together) & enjoy peaceful rural life."

The first house in the town was built on the site of present-day Hermitage High School. In 1818, the town moved from its original location to what is now Elmwood Avenue. The community's early years were difficult due to lack of water and transportation. However, over time it has developed into one of the most thriving communities in Butler County. Today, Hermitage enjoys a population of approximately 350 people and is home to several businesses including a grocery store, post office, bank and medical clinic. Hermitage has been host to many events over the years including summer festivals (such as The Faire), music festivals (such as "The 3 Day String", "Proudly National" and "Festival du Lac") and local fairs (such as Queen's Jubilee Anniversary Fair).
