The population was 1,859 at the 2000 census. The first gun hammer in Hermitage was made by Nicholas Haggerty in 1792. This tool was used to hammel nails into posts and poles. It is also believed that this type of hammer was invented by George Washington. In 1854, a sawmill opened in Hermitage and started using a gun hammer to cut lumber. By 1860, there were more than twenty sawmills in Hermitage employing over one hundred men and women with their own guns and hammers to chop wood. In 1876, Jethro Gibbs began producing barrels for the Hershey Chocolate Company at his mill site east of Hermitage on Big Beaver Creek. With the help of his son-in-law John Browning, he developed what would become the first successful shotgun barrel production process in America using continuous casting from wrought iron instead of hand forging like earlier shotguns.

For more than 12 hours Porter bombardment resulted in extensive damage to buildings and trees in town including two churches which were destroyed along with much livestock and furniture inside both locations.. Aftermath of this battle saw over 800 people killed or wounded as well as 350 military personnel from three Union brigades which included 10 cannons each! After the war ended Reconstruction began which soon led to social unrest throughout Appalachia due primarily to lack of jobs opportunities for former slaves following emancipation; drinking problems also became increasingly rampant due to licentious living habits among freedmen clustered around towns like Hermitage where whiskey sales totaled $1 million per year by 1870 according to one source). The first settlers in what is now Hermitage were French Huguenots who fled religious persecution in France during the 16th century. They arrived and founded a small community called "New Paltz" on the southern shore of Monongahela Lake near present-day Conshohocken Township. In 1757, they moved their settlement to what is now Hermitage after acquiring land from the estate of General George Washington. In 1802, John Wistar erected a log cabin on his farmstead for himself and his three unmarried daughters as a shelter from the cold winter weather. By 1810, he had built additions to his cabin which became known as "Wistar's Villa". He died in 1815 and was buried there with full honors due to his many years of service to society. His daughter (who married Colonel James Fenton) continued to live there until her death in 1865; her widow also lived there until her death in 1932. In 1824, construction started on an internal road linking Pittsburgh with Erie through Butler and Clearfield Counties; it was completed by 1830. The town began operations on November 3 that year when business inhabitants traveling between those two cities disembarked at the port of Point Comfort and journeyed by boat across Monongahela Lake to Hermitage for transportation back home or further markets or visits by friends or family members located within range only one day each way trip instead of taking weeks or months as before! With this new system put into place, commerce flourished as people could easily get where they needed to be with little effort expended other than disembarking at Point Comfort for their trips! A millinery shop opened up soon thereafter operated out of Wistar's Villa while local women worked at various other businesses doing things like spinning cotton goods etc.; some say even doing laundry for residents living near by! Eventually additional businesses popped up including a restaurant named after Genesee County Sheriff John Neely (the original owner), post office (1830-1836), grocery store (1836-1851), blacksmith shop(1851-1917), doctor’s office (1917-present) & schoolhouse/church.(opened 1861). These establishments helped contribute greatly towards keeping Hermitage vibrant over many years despite its challenges such as fire damage caused by lightning strikes & flooding resulting from heavy rains events! In recent decades much attention has been paid towards restoring much historic infrastructure including restoration work done on parts of Wistar’s Villa which are open today as part of Heritage Village programming!
