At that time, there were only six white residents living within the township and one black resident. The first known gunsmith in Hermitage was James W. Hardwick who opened his shop on Main Street in 1876. Hardwick continued to operate his shop until his death in 1903. In 1919, John Smeaton opened a small firearms store on Third Avenue in Hermitage. Smeaton operated his store until he died in 1968. From 1919 until 1978, the hermitage Volunteer Fire Department maintained a fire house on Spring Street which served as their main armory for storage and cleaning of firearms. In 1978, the Township of Hermitage passed a resolution authorizing the establishment of a municipal firearm repository located at 9090 State Route 11 south of town which would be used to clean and store firearms from local businesses and individuals who lacked access to government-owned guns or arsenals. The Municipal Firearms Repository was opened on October 1, 1978 and is still operating today. The Hermitage Arsenal was founded in 1796. The arsenal was located on Third Street and Hermitage Road, east of the present-day city of Pittsburgh. It was the first armory in Pennsylvania. In 1849, the arsenal became part of the United States Army and was redesignated as the Armory for West Point Academy. In 1898, it became part of the United States Navy and again became known as the Armory for West Point Academy. In 1907, it reverted to arms control status as an armory within the United States Army Corps of Engineers. After World War II, most of what is now called "Hermitage Arsenal" were closed down and used for storage until they were re-opened in 1965 as a training center for National Guard units and then later used by law enforcement officers until they closed again in 1996.
Hermitage, Pennsylvania is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,635 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The name "Hermitage" comes from John Hermitage's cabin on the Allegheny Mountains. The first white settler in what is now Hermitage was James McIntyre in 1753-54. In 1824, General Anthony Wayne built a log cabin here as his headquarters during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1881, when the Delaware and Schuylkill Railroad was completed through Butler County, it crossed over Hermitage Creek and cut through the center of town. This stimulated many businesses to open up in town and make it more lively than it had been before. According to one source, most of Butler County's limestone came from quarries near Hermitage creek where they ground it into blocks for building materials and other products. A second quarry operated on nearby Mount Washington until 1912 when operations were discontinued because of overloading on the railroad cars that brought in their big blocks of Marblehead Limestone! A third quarry operated until 1941 but stopped production because of World War II shortages of stone which led to increased demand for lime from other parts of the country

In 1840, Nicholas Gwynn bought adjoining property which led to Gwynn Manor being established eventually becoming part of Arlington Heights which is now Chicago's most populous suburb. In 1861-1862 two groups of soldiers under Colonel John Ewing occupiedForthermite while they erected new barracks within its precincts preparatory to their campaign against Confederate forces that were encroaching upon western PennsylvaniaThis action marked one of those rare occasions when military service played an important role in community life in northwest Pennsylvania during the antebellum period
