They moved to Hermitage where Lucy began her career as a teacher before becoming headmistress at Easton Academy from 1819 until her death in 1832; she also served as president pro tempore of the Pennsylvania General Assembly from 1824 to 1830. In addition to his wife, Dickinson also fathered four children: James Prentice Dickinson (1801-1873), Mary Ella Dickinson Bliss (1803-1884), Prescott Willard Dickinson (1800-1881) and Darius Noyes Dickinson (1800-1865). After Lucy's death, Dickinson remarried Fanny Alger Houghton () on December 2, 1835; they had two daughters: Harriet Butler Houghton () and Eleanor Richards Houghton (). It was through his second marriage that John Prentice Dickinson became involved with Hermitage politics; he would later become one of the most influential Republicans during Reconstruction Era America. McGowan's grandson, George Wirtz also built a home there in 1882-1883. In 1863, General Philip Sheridan chose to encampment his troops near present-day Hermitage as protection from Confederate raiders operating along the Cumberland River Valley west of Pittsburgh. Many residents of nearby Clearfield (now part of Westmoreland) sided with General Sheridan and helped build an artillery Battery E at Hermitage where it still stands today - one of only three remaining battery positions dating back to the American Civil War within Allegheny County! Ever since its founding, Hermitage has been known for its rich agricultural history with traditional crops like corn and potatoes being grown; however, other industries have come and gone over time such as manufacturing or transportation; but one constant has been its strong community spirit which has helped keep many businesses open during tough times throughout history! From 1903 until 1978 when it merged with neighboring Pine View Township to form a new Borough government led by Mayor Coleman Aherns; most people thought that this move would be the beginning of the end for either township due to how much both had differed from one another politically since their incorporation into Borough government!
