Hazleton is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. Hazleton is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hazleton were France's Nicolas de Champlain and his party in 1614 and again in 1617; they named it "Hazard" after their leader, Hazard du Lac. In 1795, John Armstrong founded Armstrong Paper Company there and began producing paper for the Erie Canal. By 1815, Hazleton had a post office, three churches (Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian), two stores (the Old Barr store and the New Barr store) and about 150 residents. In 1825 Samuel Morse established a mail route from Gettysburg through Hazleton to Philadelphia via Reading. By 1830 there were ten businesses in Hazleton with a total payroll of $2 million. The Panic of 1837 destroyed most of the local paper industry but Armstrong continued to produce paper until his death in 1862. He bequeathed his company to his son William H.; it became known as Wm Hatel & Sons Paper Company until 1978 when it merged with Dow Jones & Co., which became Time Warner Incorporated. During World War II much of what is now Hazleton was taken over by Army Air Forces Base McGuire Field as part of Project Mule which built an airfield for General Dwight D Eisenhower's forces during World War II; many structures still remain today including barracks buildings used by the Air Force Special Operations Command Detachment-General Headquarters (Airborne). After the war development resumed with other businesses such as Bethlehem Steel Corporation expanding into town along with numerous homes being erected throughouttown resulting in its current appearance including streetscape redevelopment that started around 1990s According to 2015 census data,[1] 2% of all households are below poverty line while 7% have above 100% college degrees according to US Census Bureau definition while 9% are veteran or military veterans according to borough records[2]. His son John Skene erected a log cabin on land that he donated to the township as an early indication of its settlement status. Hazleton had its own post office from 1814 until 1857 when it became part of Scranton; however, it continued to send mail using Pennsylvania Dutch as its official language until 1861 when English became the de facto language for all public transactions in Pennsylvania at that time. In 1913, Hazleton voters passed a referendum authorizing incorporation into Scranton Township effective July 1st Of that year and this fact remains unchanged to this day despite attempts by local government officials to change or undo the decision many times over ensuing years culminating with efforts by then-Mayor Edwin Schaefer (D) during his final term as Mayor in 1976 to have Hazleton annexed into Scranton proper due to overwhelming population growth there which never materialized because of political correctness considerations brought about by then-Scranton Township Manager Everett Jelks (R). Despite these efforts by Mayor Schaefer, annexation never happened because it would have put Hazleton within one mile of Scranton's city limits and that would have resulted in significant financial losses for both municipalities combined which would not be incentive enough for either side to agree thereto given their respective histories and interests therein. As per law at that time all townships were created upon merger regardless of whether or not they voted for incorporation so long as they had a 2/3 majority vote among their residents voting on approval; however, only 4 out of 11 precincts throughout portions thereof including Hazletown Heights survived annexation thereby preventing any meaningful growth potential therein despite having more than half the total number votes cast therein; furthermore much like other municipalities across Pennsylvania annexed smaller towns without even asking or getting popular consent prior thereto such as Allentown which merged with Bethlehem just 5 years later while Mifflinburg successfully petitioned unsuccessfully for merger with Harrisburg back in 1907 – none of these moves result in actual annexation but instead simply increasing size and population boundaries within those same municipalities rather than actual realignment taking place within municipal borders like was contemplated and desired by those aforementioned individuals responsible for bringing about these situations although failed initially – something we can still seeoccurring today albeit less frequently due to more recent trends toward centralization within state governments via online forms such as Facebook etc.)
