Hazleton is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,751 at the 2010 census. Hazleton is the county seat of Butler County. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settler in Hazleton was George Hazlett who arrived in 1798 and built a cabin on the east side of what is now Hazleton Creek. The original town site was located on lands granted to him by James Hanna. In 1811, John Way founded Way Station on what is now North Third Street and West Third Avenue in present-day Hazleton. In 1814, David Immelman established a tavern called "The Black Dog" in what is now East Fourth Street near Main Street in present-day Hazleton Township. That year, also, Samuel Sargent bought land from Hanna and erected a sawmill onpresent-day South Main Street in Hazleton Township where he operated it until his death in 1836. The first schoolhouse was built here around 1800 by Reverend Amos Whitehurst as an academy forcolored children learning to read and write.. In 1806, Andrew Gregg established an agricultural store here which became known as the “Grand Old Store”; it still stands today across Center Avenue from Hazleton High School (now known as PA 1). A post office was established at Hazleton about 1800 and continued operating until 1865 when it was replaced by the current one at North Third Street/West Third Avenue.

They named the town after Jean-Baptiste Hazlewood, an early settler on the Delaware River who died in 1711. In 1801, Hazleton became a part of Pennsylvania; it was named for General James Hazlett, who served as Governor of Pennsylvania from 1784 to 1786. Hazleton was founded by Benjamin Fenton in 1824 as a small farming community on the east side of the Monongahela River near present-day Easton. By 1830, Fenton had built a gristmill and two sawmills on what is now known as Main Street. He also erected a store and house on what is now Third Avenue. The village began receiving mail from other settlements in Carbon County through post offices established at Farmersville (now Allentown), White Oak (now Meadville), and Westmoreland (now Scranton). In 1834, Hazleton Academy was founded by Reverend John Witherspoon and Dr. John Hestert to provide education for Native American children living within its boundaries; it operated until 1865 when it merged with Easton Academy to form Atlantic Collegiate School . In 1840, Aaron Burr visited Hazleton while he was campaigning for president; he stopped at Fenton's mill on his way back upriver from Harrisburg. On October 10th of that year, Burr assassinated President James Ketchum at least two miles away from Fenton's mill along Deep Creek before crossing back upstream into Pennsylvania so as not to alert local militia stationed nearby about his whereabouts . As a result of Burr's assassination, tensions between Moravians and Catholics ran high throughout America during the antebellum period; this led to several assaults upon Catholic churches throughout Carbon County . Even though many residents sided with their respective factions during the presidential campaign that followed Ketchum's death, most people in Hazleton generally remained quiet about what took place outside their doors – something which would change later during Reconstruction when many – including some old timers – found themselves targeted by white supremacists groups seeking revenge against those they felt had wronged them during Reconstruction
