In that year, John Hazleton founded the Hazleton Glass Works, which became one of the largest glass companies in America. The factory produced window panes, lamps and other household items until its closure in 1926. During World War II, Hazleton was an important manufacturing center for munitions and other military products due to its location near Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. It also played a significant role in the economic development of surrounding communities during the postwar years. In 1970, Hazleton merged with nearby Wilkes-Barre to form Pennsylvania's third-largest city.

The present-day name for Hazleton comes from its location on the Susquehanna River near Dumfries and Galloway Township (now part of Findlay Township), where William Hazletons farmstead stood until it burned down in 1853. According to the United States Census Bureau, hazelnut or chestnut tree farming began in Hazleton around 1800; early residents may have been descendants of German immigrants who settled in this area during the mid-19th century. Hazelnuts are now an important commodity crop in hazeltons with annual production reaching 350 metric tons according to US Department of Agriculture statistics as of 2016 During World War II nearly all manufacturing located within 3 miles (5 km) radius was turned into munitions factories used for Bombing run deep into enemy territory producing death and destruction far beyond our own borders; little did we know that these munitions would eventually end up contaminating our soil with radioactive materials – even today those plants still produce some kind of radiation exposure hazard! A few examples are: Wernicke Arsenal Ammunition Plant located just outside Hazleton – their product right next door to your backyard! Slater & Gordon Glass Works on Industrial Road just north of town – their windows touch ground nearby and they don’t release any toxins until you get close! Asbestos processing also took place on both sides of Forbes Avenue just east of town center – not too far from where you live today! Finally one must ask ourselves how safe it really is living within these same boundaries day after day? After all these years has anything changed? Unfortunately yes it has! Some old relics that once were thought harmless have become sources for cancerous growths thanks to continued exposures to radiation found throughout our community . . . but what about all those other communities that didn’t go through such dire straits? They continue to thrive while we struggle daily with health concerns stemming not only from Chernobyl but also Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster

The town experienced another economic downturn during the late 1990s but has since regained some popularity with its close proximity to Pittsburgh and its many cultural attractions such as Schaefer's Brewery which produces lagers and pilsners for distribution throughout Pennsylvania and neighboring states.
