When World War I began, hazelnut oil prices went up and Colonel Kappes decided to stop selling cigars and start making munitions instead. The company continued until 1924 when it closed its doors due to the Depression era Economic conditions. An early resident of Hazleton was George Washington Harris who settled there around 1800 with his family; he cleared land and built a log cabin that still stands today on West Third Street near what is now Second Avenue West.George Washington Harris: A Biography His descendants continue to live there today.
