Hazleton, Pennsylvania is a small town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. Hazleton is the county seat of Lackawanna County. The name Hazleton was derived from the Shawnee word "hazo" meaning "a place for burying goods." Hazleton was founded by Quakers in 1798 as a settlement on the Susquehanna River. In 1801 it became part of the United States and through various treaties with Great Britain it retained its British-controlled character until 1917 when it became an American state. The town's first store opened in 1798 and until 1800 it served as a trading post between Philadelphia and New York City. From 1800 to 1814 Hazleton was under military occupation by General George Washington during his War of 1812 campaign against Canada. In 1814 Hazleton became the capital of what would become Lancaster County after being chosen over Reading and Wilkes-Barre because both towns had application forms but no votes were cast due to lack of residents. It remained this way until 1889 when Lancaster County was divided into two counties - Delaware and Potteries - and Hazleton fell within Delaware County. A local landowning family, the McGowan brothers, played an important role in early development of Hazleton; they donated land for public schools and built roads in the community when they felt their influence would be greater than that of their neighbors on Susquehanna Heights west of town limits. In 1829 John Hays established a paper mill which soon became one of the largest paper mills in America (see also Westmoreland Paper Company).
