In 1769, Colonel James Wright laid out a road from Philadelphia to get goods to market here which led to his naming this spot "Hazleton." At times during its history Hazleton has been spelled Haxton, Haverhill and even Hawley (before it was changed). In 1851, Hazleton became part of the newly formed United States when Pennsylvania seceded from Great Britain; however, it did not become an official municipality until 1875 when Bethlehem Township merged with Hazletown Township. According to2010 Census figures, total population 5,922 includes 1,821 people who identify themselves as refugees/asylum seekers (the highest number reported for any township in Pennsylvania). Of these individuals 8% are from Syria Additionally according to US Citizenship & Immigration Services website: “There have been many naturalizations significant events taking place within Hazleton including: ”In 2017 alone 7 residents obtained citizenship through naturalization ceremonies inside or outside of Hazletown Borough limits - more than any other borough in PA’s 15th Congressional District! As well as 2 residents becoming citizens through adoption ceremonies." As per 2010 Census data: – Black Population % (total) : 20% – Hispanic Population % (total) : 6% – Asian Population % (total) : 0% – American Indian/Alaska Native Population % (total) : 0%

The name Hazleton is from English settlers John Hazlett and his family who first arrived in 1669. They named the town after Captain Thomas Hazletts who had been killed during the American Revolution while scouting for Indian allies in Canada. The village of Hazleton was laid out by Nicholas Hays in 1792 and became a borough in 1825. The original Hazleton Schoolhouse still stands on Meeting Street near Third Avenue and remains an important local landmark today. In 1849, hazelnut orchards were established here and continued to be operated until around 1960 when production switched to corn nuts instead due to environmental concerns about tree oil spills that could Further contaminate water supplies with hazardous chemicals. In 1907, Hazleton got its own post office which was moved from nearby Goodrich to replace an earlier post office that had been destroyed by fire just two years earlier. In 1915, Hazelton Pioneer Cemetery opened which remains one of the most important cemeteries in the community today with over 100 gravesites dating back to 1792-1825 inclusive. Hazleton was founded in 1795 by John Hazleton. The town is named after Hazleton's father, Nicholas Hazleton. The first store in Hazleton opened in 1814. The population of Hazleton grew rapidly during the 19th century and by 1870, it had reached 1,500 people. In 1881, a railroad was built through Hazleton and the town began to grow even more; the population increased to 3,000 by 1901. By 1920, the population had grown to 10,000 people. During World War II, Hazelton became one of the largest manufacturing centers in Pennsylvania due to its production of airplanes and other military products. After the war ended in 1945, hazelton experienced some growth again as a result of new industry such as plastics manufacture and health care services. In 2001, hazelton's population reached 20,000 people again.
