A school house still stands today on First Street between High Street and Market Street which served as both primary and secondary school until 1957 when it merged with Scranton Township Schools becoming part of Hazleton City School District #1 In 1810 David Stone built a mill on West Main Street where he remained until his death in 1872 A post office called "Hazlet" was established at what would become Hazleton on January 10, 1800 by James Brownell On February 14th of that year, Samuel Sprague erected a store at what would become Second Avenue In 1825 Amos Hubbard donated land to build a gristmill near Third Avenue and East Market Street It wasn't until 1830 that mills began operating along Third Avenue near present day Union Station with William Tritsch being one of the first owners/ operators In 1861 Isaac McCoy purchased “Old Mill Site” east of Third avenue for $2,000 McCoy named it “McCoy Park” due to its location adjacent to Pittsburghsburgh Railway Depot (now known as PPL Connections) which he used as his home while located in Hazleton . In 1865 McCoy sold “Old Mill Site” to Abraham Bowman who renamed it “Bowman Park” due to its location adjacent to then Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Depot now known as Penn Central Station . Bowman operated this property until 1912 when he leased it back from Abraham Bowman's widow Anna Bellekowich Bowman . In 1924 Abram Zapletal bought “Old Mill Site” from Anna Bellekowich Bowman for $225 per acre which made him one of only two people ever granted permission by PA Department Of Transportation To Export Coal From This Property
