On December 12, 1751, General Edward Braddock led his expedition into what is now West Virginia during their attempt to capture Fort Duquesne from Native Americans; upon his return trip across Northumberland Mountains he learned about Indian attacks on settlements along the Monongahela River Valley and decided against continuing any further westward expansion until better security could be provided for them. This event helped set off years of frontier violence between native nations and European settlers throughout much of North America which ultimately led to Britain ceding control over Canada to France in 1867 and eventual independence for most colonies including America. In 1681, following William III's accession as King of England following his father's death that year, Pennsylvanian Shawneetown became one of thirteen townships within Lancaster County under royal charter granted by King Charles II following surveys executed by Samuel de Champlain himself Resident Surveyor General for New England pursuant to Lord Saybrook's Proclamation dated October 15th folio 5 Henr rd 1681/2 & others: among these were: Bethlehem Township comprising parts or all but two miles square thereof situate easton aforesaid [and] Newtown Township adjoining Bethlehem aforesaid [were] erected together with other township lots agreeable thereto viz.: Aldermancies etc.: unto Which charter are annexed certain rights reserved… . . . And so ended this particular Township Charterry." A survey taken subsequent year showed that only 2 percent or soofwhat had originally been allotted in 1681 still remained unappropriated asidefromcertain Lots appertaining thereto belonging respectivelyto Bethlehem Township & Newtown Township being sold outrightfor £5 per acre"to each proprietor."
