Harrisburg is a city in and the county seat of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 21,871 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in Pennsylvania after Philadelphia. Harrisburg has been called "The Birthplace of Democracy" for its role as the capital of the United States from 1783 to 1795 and again from 1797 to 1801. In 1581, German settlers founded a small town on what is now Lancaster County's east side (the site of present-day Harrisburg), named Pembroke for Prince Maurice of Orange, Count of Holland. In 1682, King Charles II granted land near where present-day University Park would be built for students at William Penn's request. The area was known as Oldtown Township until it was renamed Harrisburg in honor of James I., king of Scotland and England who became James II in 1685 upon his victory over Charles II at Worcester Heights. By 1700, much developed on this site including the first courthouse and first schoolhouse in what is now central Pennsylvania. The town charter was obtained by petition from 11th Creek Chief Ebenezer Scranton on December 6th, 1700; however due to opposition by surrounding landowners it wasn't put into effect until January 7th, 1751 when George Washington signed an executive order creating a new government designed specifically to serve Germantown with all due haste which followed his inauguration as President on February 14th that year During the American Revolutionary War (1775-83), General John Forbes led an army through Cumberland County under General Braddock’s orders towards Yorktown but were defeated near Frederickstown on July 29th before reaching Yorktown five days later. This event helped develop military strategy for future conflicts and also demonstrated British weakness in comparison to American forces which allowed Patriots such as George Washington to succeed against them without assistance On September 3rd, 1776 two weeks after General Braddock's defeat at Yorktown Lieutenant Colonel John Armstrong mounted an attack against British forces under Rear Admiral Jeffrey Amherst off Cedar Point peninsula whileighty other Patriot volunteers manned shore batteries offshore waiting for action ashore It should be noted that only about 50% or so of these men actually participated in this attack because most likely they were more focused on defending their homes rather than taking part in an open battle Amherst failed to dislodge Armstrong's force resulting in some high civilian casualties including nine women and six children killed instantly along with twenty-six soldiers wounded plus one captured Aftermath saw further criticism within Parliament over how could militarily unprepared civilians have committed such heinous atrocities when English troops had easily sacked numerous villages nearby without any loss whatsoever during their trek across America

In 1728, English colonists arriving from North Carolina renamed it after James Burnet, Earl of Burlington (1702-72). This name stuck until 1837 when it changed back to "Harrisburg." The early years of Harrisburg's development were difficult due to lack of infrastructure and transportation opportunities. However, through hard work and innovation local entrepreneurs created some of America's earliest industries including papermaking and brewing beer. In 1814–15, Harrisburg became home to one of America's first political conventions when delegates met at Mechanics Hall to nominate James Kossuth as president against Adams’ bid for reelection). That same year also saw construction begin on what would become known as Capitol Hill –the first permanent structure in Harrisburg – which still stands today! During this time period many influential citizens lived and worked in or near Harrisburg such as Robert Morris (founder of University Of Pittsburgh), Nicholas Simons (prime mover behind Philadelphia’s rebirth following its Revolutionary War destruction), John Dickinson ( wastewater treatment plant builder who later served as secretary general for foreign affairs under Ulysses S Grant)and even William Pennsylvanian patriot Andrew Johnson! Additionally there were several distinguished military commanders who served in both World Wars including General John Pershing (USA)and Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig! One key factor that contributed significantly to Harrisburg's decline during the late 19th century was increased competition from surrounding cities such as Pittsburgh; Philadelphia; Baltimore; Buffalo; Niagara Falls; Detroit; Cleveland; Cincinnati; Chicago & Erie Railroad Company & other railroad companies that came into being during this time period seeking new markets for their products& services outside those traditional agricultural areas& regions where they operated previously! This typeof competition often led businesses owners/managers to reduce production or close their doors altogether while others managed to keep business afloat but at much reduced levels!!! As more businesses closed down throughout these times there was less demand for goods& services produced within these traditional areas& regions resulting in job losses among rural farmer families whose livelihoods depended entirely upon production!! Furthermore many farmers found themselves unable or unwillingTo compete with larger merchants/businesspeople who could pay them better wages plus provide reliable transportation & marketing resources!!!! unfortunately this trend continued into the 20th century!!!!!
