The first Protestant preacher known to have preached in present day Harrisburg was Revs . John Smyth and James Maclaren who ministered from1793 until about 1807 when they traveled to Philadelphia due to public opposition to religious services being conducted within town limits (). In 1827 Presbyterian Reverend Drury established a seminary which became Dickinson College (). In 1829 Baptist Reverend Drury announced plans for a theological college which would eventually become Penn State University (). A school bell was cast for Dickinson College’s first building that year but it never rang because no one wanted to buy it! In 1865–66 Union Pacific Railroad constructed its main line through what is now downtown Harrisburg connecting Buffalo Junction with Scranton () via Wilkes-Barre () then Allentown (); this created much economic activity around what are today downtown streets such as 3rd Ave., 6th St., 10th Ave., 11th St., 12nd Ave., Market Square (later renamed Independence Mall), and Erie Boulevard (formerly PA Route 422). At this time Downtown business districts included Springdale Avenue between Third and Fourth Streets NW; Market Square between Sixth and Seventh Streets NW; Wilson Avenue between Eighth and Ninth Streets NW; South Street between Tenth and Eleventh Streets NW; North Street between Twelfthand Thirteenth Streets NW; Alley Alley east of Main Street north of Fifth Avenue NE ; original buildings still stand today along these streets including Pennoyer Hall (renamed Federal Reserve Bank Building since 1996), State Capitol Building (a National Historic Landmark since 1984), Allegheny Plaza across I-90 from UPMC Mercy Hospital (), First National Bank Tower (), First Plank bank building (), Second Plank bank building (), Easton Sideroad Road Bridge over Susquehanna River northeast side opposite alleyway currently known as Lower Greencastle Drive
