They built a log cabin on what is now known as Lower North Avenue (now Washington Street) and named it "Hanover". A post office was established at Hanover in 1729, and remained open until 1847. In 1830, John Penn founded the College of Philadelphia to provide higher education for men. Penn's generous gift to Hanover College provided a seed money for its growth which continued until it became Pennsylvanian State University in 1967. In 1834, George Washington Checkoway purchased land east of present-day Hanover for $2,000 and laid out a town called "Checkoway Heights" on what are now Brushy Hill Road and Diamond Street. Checkoway had come to this area from Lancaster County where he was mayor from 1827 to 1830 and again from 1832 to 1840. He donated land for schools and churches, helped found the Pennsylvania Academy of Science (now University Park), erected someof Centre Square's earliest buildings (the old stately home of Judge John Wirtzhull), gave money towards construction of Market Square (now Univision Stadium), contributed funds towards the purchase of other properties within town limits including much of present-day Delaware Avenue between Brushy Hill Road and Diamond Streets, founded two volunteer fire departments - one located near what is today First Baptist Church on Delaware Avenue; also part ofpresent day Greektown - later renamed simply "Hanover" after him -and laid out streets that still run parallel today including Main Street; West Boulevard; South Boulevard; East Boulevard Today there are over 200 businesses/ organizations with more than 10 acres within town limits with over 100 services offered including: accounting/financial consulting/finance/banking/real estate management/investment banking The municipality has an annual budget less than $1 million but spends more than $10 million annually lobbying members of Congress + millions more dollars subsidizing local businesses through various programs like special taxes etc

Hanover is a town in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The town was founded by George Washington and his family in 1784 as a small farming community on the west bank of the Delaware River. In 1821, Hanover became part of the newly created state of Pennsylvania when it was split from Maryland. After being annexed by Reading Township in Berks County in 1896, Hanover joined Berks County as well and its name changed to simply "Hanover". The first white settlers arrived in what is now Hanover Township on March 10, 1784, when George Washington's father-in-law erected a farmstead there. The original settlers included Washington himself and his wife Martha Custis (née Randolph). They set up house #1 on land that later became known as West Side Road. At first they did not have anything to eat but grew crops and hunted game for their bare subsistence. However, over time they started to build log homes which they named "George" after their patriarch and "Wash" after Mount Vernon where he served as President from 1797 until 1800 under terms of the Treaty of Paris ending the French Revolutionary War. By 1800, some 400 people lived in what is now Hanover Township proper with about 60% being farmers; many were tenant farmers who rented land from others for agriculture or hunting/fishing opportunities In 1821, followingrity referendum approved annexation by Reading Township along with all other eastern Boroughs within Pennsylvania including Bethlehem Heights (now Easton) which voted against annexing because it would have given away much valuable property including Broadmeadow Village located just south of present day Hanovertown limits On December 8th 1827 during an election held to fill a vacancy caused by death of Amos Eaton due to yellow fever pandemic then current president James Ketchum won re-election defeating opponent John Cameron with 54% of the vote becoming effective January 1st 1828 On February 11th 1830 new Commonwealth Act gave township formaldehyde gas works noxious emissions permit for primary production followed by erection plant & brick kilns beginning production on May 25th 1830 . On October 12th 1840 building began for high school graduating classes students marched into town square chanting “Free School – Free Schools!” New school buildings were completed November 3rd 1840 . Post office opened December 6th 1840

In 1828, John Lennon and Yoko Ono lived in a cabin on the edge of town for two years while they unsuccessfully attempted to start a music career in the area. In 1881, James Wickersham platted and named his community after George Washington's home village of Mount Vernon. He also founded the town's first school and post office. When it became part of Luzerne County on March 13, 1892, Hanover Borough became one of its six townships. On October 15 of that year, residents voted to annex West Newton Township which lay adjacent to Hanover Borough on the east side of Route 219 north of Lancaster Mills Road (now known as Lancaster Pike). Congress annexed West Newton Township on December 5th 1913 following approval from PA county commissioners; this action created township boundaries that continue to this day.
