In postwar years, local businesses have continued to prosper, with many employees working in nearby industries such as steelmaking, healthcare services, manufacturing, or education. Today Hanover remains an agricultural community with a strong emphasis on food production—mainly corn and soybeans—and unique traditions such as its annual corn festival (the most important event in town). The town of Hanover, Pennsylvania was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Krantz. The first settler in the area was John Kittredge. Kittredge and his family built a cabin on the south side of the Susquehanna River. When he died in 1827, his widow married George Washington Carpenter. Carpenter moved to Hanover from Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1829. He became a justice of the peace and served as mayor from 1840 to 1845 and again from 1850 to 1855. In 1851, he married Martha Washburne and they made their home at 9th and Market Streets. After Washburne's death in 1865, Carpenter continued to live there until his death in 1888. The townspeople donated land for a school district which was chartered in 1909. The first building for the school was erected on what is now School Street. In 1915, the town annexed neighboring properties including Westville and Eastville Township. In 1922, it changed its name to Hanover Township because of accession by Governor Franklin D Roosevelt during World War II
Hanover Township was organized in 1824, and became a borough in 1854. It was renamed Hanover City in 1901.
