Hanover is a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The township and unincorporated community were formed from part of Chesterfield Township in 1824. They were renamed Hanover Township in 1847 after the Duke of Wellington's landing there during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1875, they became a borough with a mayor and a city-like government when they annexed the neighboring community of Philipsburg. The borough was dissolved in 1998 and its land absorbed into nearby Pennsauken Township. The first settler to arrive in what is now Hanover Township was John Purdy who landed on October 15th, 1795 on an unknown piece of land granted by George Washington to his father-in-law Nicholas chartered ship "Dolphin" for that purpose as noted on a deed from John Purdy to Nicholas dated December 2nd, 1795 which still exists at the local Unitarian church today. He built his home near White Sands Creek about two miles northeast of modern day Hanover Twp., thenBeginning around 1800 farmers started moving into what is now Lancaster County including some hereabouts who had arrived before John Purdy did however most settlement took place within what are today known as Hanover Township and surrounding areas due to lack of other options at that time especially given how thinly populated much of this area was at that point also NOTE: Prior to 1825 when most land within present day Lancaster County belonged to Pennsylvania it included parts of Delaware and West Virginia
Hanover was founded by George Washington in 1777. It became a state in 1802. In the Civil War, Hanover sided with the Union and was burned by Confederate forces. After the war, Hanover became a part of Pennsylvania.
