The first gun shop in Hanover was established by John and Ebenezer Brown in 1810. The business grew rapidly and by 1815 it had become one of the largest gun shops in Great Britain. The Gun Part Shop at 1-14 Main Street remained open until 1861 when it closed because of lack of customers. In 1868, a new gun shop opened on 3rd Street which became known as “the Arsenal”. This store continued to operate until 1921 when it closed again due to lack of customers. In 1925, 2nd & Market Streets merged to form 4th & Market which became known as “the Armory”; however this store also ceased operations within a few years due to economic conditions. In 1935, Hansberry Firearms Company opened up shop at 204 South Third Street which remains today one of the most populargun stores in Pennsylvania thanks to its large selection of rifles, shotguns and handguns for all types of shooters. Hanover's history goes back to 1764 when George Washington and his family moved from Charlestown, Massachusetts to what is now Hanover Township (and later to Princeton Township), where they founded a small town called Newtown. In 1799, when the United States Congress created Lancaster County, it included Newtown and all of what is now Hanover Township. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Susquehanna River betweenPhiladelphia and Yorktown Heights in New York City; traffic and commerce diverted away from Newtown during the Revolutionary War era because of its distance from battle sites. In 1814, as part of the Moraviangements settlement movement across North America in response to Great Britain's revocation of religious privileges for Protestants following her Napoleonic Wars victory over France, some Germans living in Bethlehem Township near Philadelphia organized a group known as "Harding'tonians" to seek refuge in nearby Hanover Township. They arrived by boat on September 12th and soon established themselves as a Lutheran community with their own church and schools. When war erupted between Great Britain and France in 1815–1816, many European immigrants left for military service but not Harding'tonians who remained throughout the conflict. After hostilities ended in 1817, many tonnage traders returned home after completing their business ventures along the Susquehanna River; however, most Harding'tonians continued traveling southward until they finally settled permanently at what is now Uniontown (now Altoona) in 1828. During Reconstruction period (1865-1913), many Germans who had remained behind regained their rights as American citizens; however, some aspects of German culture such as agricultural practices continue to be resisted by local residents today. Despite these challenges – which have led to occasional protests against German cultural symbols or activities - overall life has been relatively peaceful within the bounds of official policy since World War II began on September 11th 1945.. Today Hanover Borough features two wards: one represented by Mayor Tom Kappenheimer while Borough Council meets biennially; and another ward represented by six members elected at-large using a preferential voting system that encourages open discussion among residents about issues important to them regardless of party affiliation or political leanings..
