Hanover, Pennsylvania is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Hanover was founded in 1779 by Nicholas Griggs and his family. The Griggses were also the first settlers to what is now known as Lancaster County. In 1814, General Wellesley Grant made Hanover his headquarters during the Peninsular War before he moved on to Fort Donelson in Tennessee. In 1868, after the American Civil War ended, General Ulysses S. Grant re-established military rule in Butler and Lancaster Counties and designated Hanover as its capital. Because of this designation, it has been called "The Capital of Butler County." Hanover became an incorporated municipality on December 14th 1897 from portions of Union Township and East Liberty Township. On February 7th 1922 it merged with neighboring community of Uniontown which had been organized two years earlier but did not become a Municipality until 1896 when it amalgamated with parts of Springboro Township On November 3rd 1932 residents of both towns voted to secede from Butler County because they felt that their services were no longer being provided by county government while Boroughs such as Allentown and Bethlehem had received greater recognition within the county government Hanover remained an unincorporated community until its incorporation into a municipality on December 14th 1997 . The incorporation ceremony took place at Highland Park Lodge located off US 422 east of town center In October 2009 plans were announced for a new football stadium called Stroudsburg University Stadium which would be built adjacent to Highland Park Lodge across from the old high school where Hanover High School used to be
Hanover, Pennsylvania was a borough in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania from 1871 to 1896. The town of Hanover was founded by John and Susannah Shaler in 1795. The first post office at Hanover was established on July 5, 1800. In 1821, the township of Hanover was formed from parts of the borough of Lancaster. In 1831, the township became a separate county. The township lost its county status in 1896 when it merged with the neighbouring borough of Lancaster to form the city of Lancaster.
