In 1846, a group of men in Hanover Township, Pennsylvania started the first rifle company in the United States. The company was called "The Riflemen of Hanover". It fired shot from a muzzleloader until 1851 when it switched to a rifle. In 1852, they formed their own militia and continued to fire shots from a muzzleloader into the late 1800s.

John Witherspoon is also responsible for the name of Hanover Square which stands today on Market Street in Hanover Township. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Lancaster County seceded from Pennsylvania and formed their own state called West Virginia. The residents of Hanover Township decided to stay with Pennsylvania, but were forced to leave their homes due to the war. After the war ended, many people returned toHanover Township and started new businesses. In 1990, when Lancaster County was merged into Pennsylvania again, Hanover Township lost its independent status but continues to maintain a strong presence within Lancaster County through its government institutions such as schools and libraries
