Hanover is a borough in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, located in Westmoreland County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,813. Hanover was founded by Germans in 1781 and became a borough on December 12, 1803. In 1876, it merged with neighboring Altoona to form what is now known as Altoona-Hanover Township. The name "Hanover" comes from Germany and means "the capital." The first settler in Hanover was Jacob Hahn who arrived there in 1781. He had been appointed justice of the peace for Plymouth County and established himself there before moving to what is now Hanover Township on May 10th, 1782. There were also five others who moved into this area: Johann Kappenberger (1783-1834), Nicholas Christophs (1785-1847), Michael Fischer (1787-1857), Gottlieb Weigel (1800-1868) and Friedrich Wilhelm Freiherr von Steuben (1800-1873). All except Kappenberger later died in the township or elsewhere within Westmoreland County. In 1803, when Chester County was created from parts of Westmoreland and Lebanon counties, Hanover became part of that new county as well. It remained so until 1840 when it reverted back to its original status as a borough within Westmoreland County
Hanover Township was organized in 1824 and named for the Hanover family, which had a seat in Lancaster County. The first home of the township's founders was located on the east side of the Susquehanna River. In 1829, voters added an unincorporated community on the west side of the river to its boundaries. The community became known as West Hempstead. As township boundaries evolved, so too did its name, becoming Hanover Township (now part of Radnor County) in 1868.
