The first airguns were invented in Hanover, Pennsylvania in 1824 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. They were called "Conte's Air Gun." In 1827, John Palfrey developed an airgun that used a breechloader mechanism that allowed the gun to be fired multiple times without reloading. This became known as the "Palfrey Gun." By 1830, all of Pennsylvania had some form of an airgun and shooting competitions were held throughout the state. In 1835, Congress passed legislation authorizing use of firearms for hunting purposes and mandate that all firearms must be licensed and registered with the government. This created a need for additional firearm manufacturing facilities in order to produce these new licenses and registration forms. In 1840, Samuel Colt began producing rifles using his patented breechloading system which allowed them to be fired multiple times without reloading. His company soon becameknown as American Arms Corporation (AAC). With this new technology, Firearms Manufacturing began expanding rapidly across America at an unprecedented rate. The increased production caused costs associated with manufacturing firearms to increase significantly which contributed to the Panic of1847 which caused economic ruin for many Americans.Gun manufacture continued expansion into the late 1800s until it reached its peak during World War I when approximately 60% of total American rifle production took place through Precision Machine Tools Company (PMTC) located in Chicago Illinois . PMTC manufacturers cut corners during World War I resulting in mass-production errors that resulted in millions of defective rifles . These mass-produced rifles led directly to World War II when almost two billion weapons were produced worldwide

The name changed to "Hanover Township" in 1832 after the state of Pennsylvania granted it land grant for that purpose. When the U.S. Civil War began in 1861, many residents of Lackawanna County chose to fight for Confederate forces because they believed that slavery should not be defended by America's government. Many Hanover citizens also enlisted and served in combat; some even went so far as to wear Confederate uniforms while working on farms or at local arsenals. After Union victory over Confederate forces in 1865, much of Hanover reverted back to German control until finally being given back to Pennsylvania following World War II as part of the process of reunification between Germany and Austria-Hungary. Afterward, Hanover became an all-American village again with its own school system and police department (the first such department west of the Allegheny Mountains). Today, much like when it originally settled here - through hard work and determination - Hanover continues to thrive as a proud community dedicated to education and culture within its borders!

In 1824, the post office was renamed for John Fenton, 2nd Viscount Liverpool because he had donated land to make Hanover a town.
