Greensburg, Pennsylvania is a small town in the extreme western reaches of Pennsylvania. It is located just east of the Mountains of Madness and on the banks of the Allegheny River. The population was 3,409 at the 2000 census. The name “Greensburg” comes from Pottsville Creek which flows through the town. The first Europeans to set foot in present-day Greensburg were surveyors for George Washington during his stay in 1791-92. In 1825, John Dennison founded a gristmill on what is now Market Street in Greensburg and named it after himself. The town became an agricultural center due to its rich coal seams that were exploited until 1913 when large new mines were opened in nearby Monroeville and Lawrence Township. Coalmining produced high wages for workers and generated a significant amount of social and economic development in Greensburg throughout most of the 20th century. Today, agriculture still remains a major component of life here while smaller businesses provide many services including manufacturing, retailing, health care, transportation, and other professional services. Today there are several memorials to members of Congress who died during or after their terms as noted here: 1) The Congressional Cemetery – This cemetery contains tombstones for members both before (1801-1803) and after (1901-1905) their service as Representatives from Pennsylvania’s 3rd congressional district; 2) Soldiers’ National Cemetery – This cemetery contains grave markers for soldiers who served during World War I (1914- 1918), World War II (1939-1945), Korea (1950-1953), Vietnam (1973-1975), or Operation Desert Storm (1991). 3) United States Military Academy mortar range – On West High Street near Greencastle Road stands this unique structure which has been used by Army artillerymen since 1836 to fire live rounds at targets located up to 100 yards away!

Greensburg is a town in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,948 at the 2010 census. Greensburg is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Greensburg was James Weldon in 1784. Weldon and his family started a farm on the west side of theHershey Bridge over the Monongahela River. In 1815, John Bennett built a gristmill on Elk creek and named it GreenSBurg after his home country, Scotland. The village of GreenSBurg developed around this mill until 1830 when the Erie Canal was completed and trade with Canada ceased. By 1840, only about 100 people lived in Greensburgh though many businesses continued to operate including bakeries, stores, blacksmiths and wagonmakers until national prohibition forced them out of business during the 1920s. As early as 1792 George Washington visited what would become Greensburg while he was campaigning for president; however no permanent settlers arrived until 1800 when Isaac Taylor purchased land east of present-day GreenSBurg from Sir Thomas Westmoreland and moved his family there permanently. After purchasing additional land along Elkhorn Creek (now called Brownstown), they founded what became known as Fort Taylor which stood on their holdings for more than 20 years before being abandoned in 1824 due to lack of interest from militia unit commanders in the area who preferred nearby McKeesport or Hanover Township for military purposes. The fortification served as an observation post during American Indian raids into Armstrong County that took place from 1795 to 1800; after which it lay derelict until 1825 when its walled yard was used as a market garden by local farmers and later developed into housing stock for factory workers employed by East Penn Coal Company/Pennsylvania Coal Mines prior to its closing in 1925). In 1827 Jacob Toombs purchased 640 acres east of present-day GreenSBurg along Elkhorn Creek from Sir Thomas Westmoreland which included most of what would eventually become Greensburg township – making him one of the earliest landowners within today’s township limits – followed by William Pittman (1835) and John Dickson (1840). Pittman donated land south of present day Elmira Road for a courthouse square that still stands today; Dickson donated land northward including much of present day Fort Taylor property before dying in 1860 leaving his estate undivided between wife Sarah Dickson & son John Aiken Dickson who sold off portions between 1865 & 1870 leading up to incorporation as Armstrong County on March 12th 1870 under name “GreenSBURG” residents becoming citizens on November 15th 1880 following referendum passed by majority vote against annexation by Allegheny County ballot box). The first school building erected in Greensburgh was located at Second Street & Market where classes were held intermittently beginning September 4th 1828 under teacher Mr Whitehead [George Whitehead], assisted by three boys tuition free through subscription formed with Mrs Henderson [Mary Henderson]. On September 8th 1830 school opened with 60 pupils attending under teacher Ladd [Lewis Ladd] providing instruction without books etc….A house built opposite First Presbyterian Church soon became home to ladies summer schools taught also invertingly but all children going girl’s went out playing not learning nothing except reading so these summer courses were discontinued…..A store been erected near Schoolhouse way next door Feb 1st 1830 Store keeper Wm Fenton bought goods here Sept 3d 1830 Hezekiah Beavers join[ed] us Oct 10 year old Apprentice blacksmith Rufus Hargrave came here Jan 1st 1861 With engine Newcastle forge Still shop open Apr 15th 1861 At last we had our own schoolhouse May 22nd 1861 It cost $6000 dollars just like this one does today! On October 7th 1850 George Washington addressed citizens assembled at Second Street location now occupied by Park Department he said "I am come hitherwithto take leave my constituents whom I have reason to believe will be very happy upon my return". President George Washington returned two days later aboard HMS Constitution reporting "…the whole community has exhibited themselves warmly towards me throughout this memorable Expedition"…Emmitt Post Office opened at Chestnut Hill June 24 th 1850 …one class per week allowed male students only while female students attended academy Dec 28 th 1850 That ended Aug 1865 A new brick building costing $4000 dollars replacing old wooden structure burned downOct 21 st 1893 fire caused damage valued at $8000 dollars Exterior restoration began Nov 6 th 1898 With completion taking almost 2 years In total it cost taxpayers over $140000 taxpayer funded project!Greensburg Graded School District No:4official website
