The first Carnegie Library (now known as the First Presbyterian Church) opened its doors in 1911. The library served as a model for many other libraries throughout America subsequent years including those in Pittsburgh and Cleveland; eventually becoming part of the University of Pittsburgh System. In 1916, nearby Johnstown was destroyed by an atomic bomb explosion which left over 50% of its buildings undamaged but killed more than 60 people including 20 children playing outside their homes Bombs also damaged several hundred homes around Johnston City and six miles east near present-day Wilkes-Barre where plutonium production began at Oak Ridge National Laboratory just before Greenburger's death. After World War II ended with1945 V-E Day when Allied forces liberated Europe from Nazi occupation Greensburg became one of America's leading local supporters of communism with tens of thousands residents taking part parade through downtown streets chanting "communism equals democracy" while carrying banners reading "We are all Communists now." The last communist party meeting took place at the First Presbyterian Church on October 15th 1948 attended by about 350 people followed soon afterwards by demolition of building etc., setting off a chain reaction that led to social unrest across much of rural America culminating with McCarthyism
